Hi all, it's certainly been a while.

Got nostalgic and wondered if this group was still active.

Looks like it is!

The attendance may not be as it were, but the quality on the other hand
is just as it always was.

Haha, well, got an update for you right there, as it's no longer Mr.
Tater, but Mx. Tattie. And very much happier for it. Still Acme's very
own potato, though!

I stuck around in Edinburgh after university, have a wife, a programming
job, and two cats. The years have kinda flown by tbh. After leaving
Usenet behind, have pinged from LiveJournal to Dreamwidth to Facebook to
Reddit to Mastodon. Maybe I should have stuck right here! 8^D

I salute you for keeping the spirit of Acme alive!

All righty then... So I use 'they' when I talk about you behind your
back now? Not that I'll ever do that... talking behind someone's back, I
mean.

You would have been pretty much on your own here most of the time. I
never had a facebook account and I feel utterly vindicated and rather
smug about it now.

So two cats? Merlyne has a cat. I have no cats. Also no wife. Or job...
I spend a couple of years as self-employed consultant after
rage-quitting and then retired and moved to the countryside.

Can I ask what kind of work you do?

Thank you, kindly. I shall award myself another gold star.

I'm just a common-or-garden Java programmer, nothing too exciting.
Getting into front-end stuff more now, though.

Rage-quitting and going self-employed is always a potential.

Careful with that. You may have to interact co-operatively with actual
end-users... (Mostly kidding - talking with real people can be
enlightening. The perspective and requirement of people who use vs.
people who decide/specify is at times very different]

> Rage-quitting and going self-employed is always a potential.
As long as you have a marketable skill, and can sell sell sell...
Not one of my strong points - I mostly relied on the kindness of former
colleagues.

Don't know about that. I'm certainly not. At my first real job I was at
first nicknamed[1] Nilfisk (a venerable danish manufacturer of
vacuum-cleaners) because they motto was "The quiet dane".

I'm perfectly capable of drinking coffee and smoking while replying to
usenet post. (Not peeing, though. I have to get up for that).
I don't have any other media running - it would ruin my concentration.
Your expectation regarding the Danish Postal Service are wildly at odd
with reality - packages don't normally get further than designated
pick-up spots (usually a shop of some kind). Also it's been more than 10
years since the last (and only) time I bought shoes on line.

How does me (or the IT guy) talking to you make *you* appear crazy? Also
why are you so concerned about what other people think of you. You
should have more self confidence.

I don't do a lot of running. The latest shoes I bought was a pair of
heavy walking shoes. Serves me well enough, though I had to replace the
laces this year.

I don't know what those are, but assume they despite the similarity in
lace use are not flip-flops.

I don't have a shed. I have a garage, but that already filled with
firewood and bikes and other stuff that definitely should not be taken
to the recycling center.

So I conclude that you don't run a lot in the office.

Not at all. All the stuff in the garage is things that I need or
possibly will need or will have a use for sometime in the future. IOW
good stuff. There is also an assortment of tools for various things.

That's almost as dangerous as scissors. You should complain to your work
safety representative.

Maybe I'll spontaneously do it one day. Who can say. I'll need some

You probably should. Do you have a complaints department in your
enchanted office building?

Yes, I know. I tought I had one, but it was a crappy piece of junk that
was unable to dispense staples with any regularity. Also the included
staples were the wrong size. At least it was cheap.
