Ohio State coach Urban Meyer and people close to him knew of
2015 domestic abuse allegations against former receivers coach
Zach Smith, according to a report from former ESPN college
football reporter Brett McMurphy on Wednesday.

Courtney Smith, ex-wife of Zach Smith, provided text messages to
McMurphy she sent to Meyer's wife, Shelley, and other wives of
Ohio State coaches and said in an interview with Stadium she
believes Meyer knew of the abuse.

"Shelley said she was going to have to tell Urban," Courtney
Smith said in the Stadium interview. "I said, 'That's fine. You
should tell Urban. We can't have somebody like this coaching
young men.'"

Smith was fired as Ohio State receivers coach on July 23 after
Murphy first reported the 2015 incidents, which Meyer denied any
knowledge of during Big Ten media days last week.

"I can't say it didn't happen because I wasn't there," Meyer
told reporters then. "I was never told about anything and
nothing ever came to light. I've never had a conversation about
it. I know nothing about it. First I heard about that was last
night. No, and I asked some people back at the office to call
and say what happened and they came back and said they know
nothing about it."

According to McMurphy's report, Zach Smith allegedly assaulted
Courtney Smith after the two had separated in 2015.

"He took me and shoved me up against the wall, with his hands
around my neck," Courtney told McMurphy. "Something he did very
often. My (then 3-year-old) daughter was clinging to my leg. It
obviously registered with him what he was doing, so he took my
(then 5-year-old) son and left. So I called the police."

Cleveland.com obtained nine police reports involving domestic
disputes between the Smiths ranging from 2012 through 2018,
including two accusing Zach Smith of domestic abuse, though he
has never been charged.

He was also accused of aggravated battery on his then-pregnant
wife in 2009 while he was a graduate assistant on Meyer's staff
at Florida. The charge was dropped because of insufficient
evidence. Urban Meyer brought Smith to Ohio State as an
assistant coach in 2012.

The couple divorced in 2016.

Ohio State opens the 2018 season on Saturday, Sept. 1, at home
against the Oregon State Beavers.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
