Health care debate on abortion delayed

An amendment that would determine how the health care legislation moving
through the Senate will handle the potentially explosive issue of
abortion will be put off until Monday at the earliest, the Senate's No.
2 Democrat said today.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said Democrats are working
furiously behind the scenes to find a compromise on abortion and a
proposed government-run health insurance program -- two issues that have
divided the Democratic caucus in recent weeks. Durbin made the comments
in a call organized by Families USA, a group that supports the health
care legislation.

As lawmakers in both parties debate the $848 billion legislation on the
floor, Durbin said there are "pretty serious conversations" taking place
between Democrats. "We feel like we're moving to a point where soon we
can talk about an endgame but we're not there yet," he said. "Our goal
is to finish this bill before Christmas."

The Senate is scheduled to be in session this weekend to continue to
debate other amendments.

The abortion debate flared up after the House passed an amendment Nov. 7
that would prohibit insurance companies from covering an abortion for
any woman who receives a government subsidy to offset premium costs --
even if only private money is used for the procedure. By contrast, the
Senate legislation would require insurance companies to segregate
private premiums from subsidies and use only private money to cover the
procedure.

Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., has said he could not vote for the Senate
health care bill unless the House's stronger abortion restrictions are
included. He is expected to offer an amendment that would attach the
House language to the Senate bill. But, Durbin said, "We don't believe
the language offered at this moment is likely to pass."

If they try to ban abortion it's open season on every democrat, esp

From a non-American's perspective, this is bizarre. Democrats have to
compromise to placate these PFL nuts about funding a legal medical
procedure, and some of the Democrats are PFL nuts themselves? That
blows my mind. Even under a regressive Conservative gov't, public
funding of abortion services is not an issue here except with a
lunatic fringe which has no power. May it always be so and it may it
be so for you all one day.

Lighten up, Lefty. I just chose an unusual way of letting people
know that elizabeth's comment had nothing whatsoever to do with the
topic of the article posted ("non sequitur") and painted a
ridiculously farfetched (one might also say paranoid) scenario.

I estimate the odds against the Senate voting to ban abortion within
the next decade to be greater than those against a mile-wide asteroid
crashing into the earth in the same time frame. I'm not so sure about
the odds against elizabeth attempting to murder Osprey, but I hope
they are at least as great.

I see you and Keegan are getting along swimmingly in this thread,
despite the fact that he indulged in a dirty deletion to libel me with
equating abortion with murder. Does this have anything to do with you
having stopped responding to me on the thread where I called Chilton's
claim that he is a Christian into question, and Keegan has started
posting there?

Keegan was even illogical about it: even with his deletion, and even
using the Leftist Propagandist definition of "equate", the logical
thing for him to do would have been to charge me with equating murder
with the *banning* of abortion. But he is too dedicated to
discrediting me to let mere logic get in his way.

By the way, I hope you don't think you are discussing abortion with
Keegan here: you did talk about it in your first post, but he switched
the topic to healthcare restructuring in general.

Liar, liar, pants on fire! How typical of you, Junior. You can't challenge
him with the facts, so you just call him a liar. Just because you say
something, it doesn't make it so. After all, you're not Joseph Smith (who,
