I would like to know if 3D studio R4 can run under window 95.
If it can, how much change and what change should be made?
Jiping Lu
3DS4 cannot be run in a DOS window within windows 95, but it can be
set up as a shortcut with all the autoexec.bat and config.sys
parameters built in for a drop to DOS MODE to run 3DS4. I've never
had any problems.

Can 3DS4 be run on the version of DOS that comes with 95...?
-or- must you re-format and reinstall DOS and run a dual boot with
95?
Yeah It can be runed under version of DOS that comes with win 95 but I
had problems Runing it on both of my computers... Pentium Pro 200 X 2
and Pentium Pro 200. All you have to do is reboot couple times and make
an icon for 3ds4 on your desktop in windows.
Also You can run 3ds4 under Windows NT not quiting it like in Windows
95. There is a special file on www.autodesk.com.

This only works on NT 3.x, though...

It is most definatly possible. I do it on my P-100 with my crappy VGA
monitor. The only think I'd suggest doing is make a shortcut then
lower your the Idle sensitivity in the properties/misc portion of it.
Yeah... I do it on a P120 with 16Mb RAM, I has problems when doing VERY
complex meshes with shaddow maps, but more RAM would fix this I think.

Ahem.. I once managed to run R4 under NT 3.51.
You had to load the pharlap driver though, i think..
Anyway, it was so slow as hell, run it under good
old dos man. If you want the multitasking benefit,
either run it under Novell Dos 7, or get MAX...
Not sure this is much help
Bob
I changed my settings to have it run in Win95, It says that I have about
1,000 more memory while in windows. But when I render objects, would it
not be slower while in windows? Or should I just keep it in DOS?
Thanks
Yes it can - read the FAQ for details...

To run 3D Studio (versions 3 or 4) in Windows (3.11 or 95),
you need to copy the file PHARLAP.386 (it's in your 3DS
directory) to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and add the
following line to your SYSTEM.INI file, under the [386Enh]
section:
DEVICE=PHARLAP.386
You should not run 3DS from the command prompt.
Instead, create a shortcut to 3DS and edit its memory settings: disable EMS
memory and put a large number in the DPMI memory (I use 35000 - it doesn't
matter if the value is larger than your RAM.) If you get a message from 3DS
saying it lacks memory (especially, when it renders), increase this number.
Also, in the "Misc" tab from the shortcut props, disable the screen saver
and put the idle sensitivity bar in its minimum.
I've made some tests, and the rendering actually become FASTER in Windows
than in DOS! However, if you are using other display drivers than standard
SVGA in 3DS, switching between 3DS and other programs (using ALT+TAB) can be
a bit unstable. You've been warned! :-)
