Hi,

I've just come across this *alternative firmware" for Dlink DNS 320.  My first question is "What is the advantage of using this firmware than official one?"

I've read your homepage, FAQ but I can't find the answer.

Except DHCP and DNS that official firmware does not provide, and beside the fun and the adventure of trying newer and the excitement and stress that DNS 320 could be totally dead after :D what's the real advantage of using this firmware?

Oh by the way, is there any plan to include file-sync'ing server, eg like ownCloud or Synology like OS, into the firmware?

Have a nice day

The advantages are numerous!
Just to exemplify some: rsync, owncloud, syncthing, dlna, ssh. Has a lot more, just check the list of packages available for installation.

Using Samba to create multiple shares, instead of Volume_1 and Volume_2.

No bloatware and therefore best transfer speeds achievable with this hardware.

I've just installed it on a DNS-323 from my friend, who is Field Engineer at Microsoft (black command line screen scares him, he just like to click buttons... hahahah....). He was amazed on how easy the steps to add things are.

The other stuffs, I don't really care.  But if owncloud is included, then it's really interesting to try this.

I'm not convinced by this argument.  I have many shares with different names: films, backup, games, etc.  Volume_X is not mandatory.

Is there a benchmark result to let us appreciate the improvement?

I have 4TB disks in there. Original only allows 2TB.

Then I agree it is worth trying this alternative firmware.

I suddenly have a question.  What did you mean by "owncloud"?  owncloud server or owncloud client?

This is what you should have done to begin with. As the Wiki says, you
don't have to flash it, you can try it and later flash. And if you've
read the Wiki and don't understand it's use, then why bother asking. If
you'd searched the group, you'd have found that it has owncloud server.
Lots of post on that.

I agree with notoneofmy.

There is a lot of information on here but for some reason you want people to spoon feed you and make your mind up for you.  Try it and make your own mind up or alternatively don't :)
