Hello,

I've been running Alt-F for a couple years now and have the RC3 installed. Just recently my access to the Web Admin has stopped working. I know the server is still working since I can access my shares and Transmission is still working but the I can't access anything to change the configurations.

The last time I was able to access my device I was having issues with it continually changing back to DHCP instead of the static IP I have it configured to. I was able to resolve that but now I can't access the web admin. Even if I restart the device the web admin isn't working. I do have access to SSH though. What can I do to resolve this?

Thanks!

This indicates something wrong with the flash-saved settings. Have you ever "clear settings"? You don't say if you have Alt-F flashed.
As you have ssh access, could you post the system log? or the 'alt-f.log' file found at each filesystem base?

Regarding the flash-saved settings, if you have flashed Alt-F, you can from the command line try the 'loadsave_settings' command to see its usage, then clear settings followed by save settings

I was able to resolve that but now I can't access the web admin.

Besides ssh, do you have telnet? ftp?
from https://sourceforge.net/p/alt-f/code/2367/tree/trunk/alt-f/customroot/etc/ you can get the original inetd.conf and httpd.conf, files

inetd is running. The problem seems to be the httpd server.
Do you get any error when accessing the webUI? Forbiden, or something similar?
Cleared browser cache?
Accessed using the box IP and not its name?

You have lightttpd installed, have you changed the port of the webUI httpd server in order to use the default 80 port for lighttpd?
What is the output of

netstat -lnp
cat /etc/httpd.conf
cat /etc/inetd.conf

In Chrome it says.

The server closed the connection without sending any data.

In Firefox it says
The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

I've tried in three different browsers with deleted caches.

I always access using the IP address.

I didn't change the port of the webUI,

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

This indicates some issue with the httpd server not sending/finishing the proper headers

I've tried in three different browsers with deleted caches.

I always access using the IP address.

I didn't change the port of the webUI,

# netstat -lnp
Active Internet connections (only servers)

inetd is listening on port 80, OK

...

# cat /etc/httpd.conf
A:127.0.0.1     #!# Allow local loopback connections
D:*             #!# Deny from other IP connections
A:192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 #!# Allow local net

The httpd server is allowed to serve the local network. OK

# cat /etc/inetd.conf
http    stream  tcp     nowait  root    /usr/sbin/httpd httpd   -ih /usr/www

The inetd confguration is OK

I can't find nothing wrong with the configuration.

Will the httpd server serve simple web  pages? Try

http://<box IP>//time_hlp.html

Does it works?

You can also try to edit /etc/inetd.conf with a unix-compatible editor and set the httpd server in verbose mode, replacing the '-ih' httpd option by '-ivh', Replace

http    stream  tcp nowait  root    /usr/sbin/httpd httpd   -ih /usr/www

with

http    stream  tcp nowait  root    /usr/sbin/httpd httpd   -ivh /usr/www

And making inetd to reload the configuration file at the command line:

rcinetd reload

Then I get the following when accesing the above html page:

192.168.1.25:52180: response:200

The time help page comes up fine. Could it be an issue with the dynamic pages from the config screen? Something like PHP or something like that?

I set httpd to verbose mode and I'm getting the same response when going to the webpage.

try accessing other pages with verbose turned on.

also send the output of

ls -la /usr/www/cgi-bin

I tried changing to verbose mode again (because I noticed it didn't take last time). Once I change to verbose mode and then do rcinetd reload I can't bring up any of the help pages. The only way I can resolve this is rebooting the DNS-323.

Here is what is in the cgi-bin folder.

don't understand what you mean.

Once I change to verbose mode and then do rcinetd reload I can't bring up any of the help pages.

If you was able to set it once you should be able to set it again...

The only way I can resolve this is rebooting the DNS-323.

Here is what is in the cgi-bin folder.

Everything looks OK.

So, the http server is running OK, as it serves normal html pages (all those *.html files under /usr/www), but cgi scripts (all those *.cgi files under /usr/www/cgi-bin) are not running OK

Can you do:

cd /usr/www/cgi-bin
./login.cgi > /tmp/cgi-out.txt

and attach (not inline, please) /tmp/cgi-out.txt

Can you also login the box using telnet (not ssh) and stop all services using

rcall stop

and then unmount the Alt-F aufs branch using

aufs.sh -u

post the output of

ls -la /Alt-F/usr/www/cgi-bin/

and try accessing the webUI again. You can't even see the Status page? Try accessing

http://<box IP>/cgi-bin/logout.cgi
http://<box IP>/cgi-bin/status.cgi

None OK?

What I meant about the verbose mode thing is that it wasn't keeping the change after rebooting the DNS-323.

I have attached the cgi-out.txt file.

# ls -la /Alt-F/usr/www/cgi-bin/
total 32
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root          4096 Jul 11 20:00 .
drwxr-xr-x    3 root     root          4096 Jun 29 15:08 ..
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root          6417 Jun  6  2012 lighttpd.cgi
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root          4218 May 31  2012 lighttpd_proc.cgi
-rwxrwxrwx    1 root     root             0 Dec  3  2011 tmp.NncD6D
-rwxrwxrwx    1 root     root             0 Sep  4  2011 tmp.r7Bzaz
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root          1402 Jun  5 19:08 transmission.cgi
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root          2111 Mar 15 17:52 transmission_proc.cgi

After those steps I still can't access the status page,

I get the error

The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

When trying to go to either of those cgi pages now.

I have attached the cgi-out.txt file.

That's fine.

I'm sorry, but I can't find anything wrong.

To summarize:

-inetd is correctly configured and running and launches httpd when requested
-httpd is correctly configured and invoked and even displays the help html pages
-httpd seems to not be able to run cgi scripts, but they are correctly executed when launched directly from the command line.

I have no other clue for you to follow.
Only running cgi scripts (http://<box IP>/cgi-bin/login.cgi e.g.) with httpd in verbose mode, which you have not yet done...
and posting the output of 'ls -l /bin/sh /usr/sbin/httpd /bin/busybox', but don't have many hope

When I edit inetd.conf by adding v and then I run the rcinetd reload command the web server will no longer respond. I get No Data Received for the help pages.

The only way I been able to resolve this is by powering down my DNS-323 and then starting it back up. BUT when I do the power cycle the inetd.conf file no longer has the edit I made. It is not saving the edit (and yes I have confirmed that I have rights to edit the file, I'm logging in as admin when I edit it).

You was able to do it once. If needed, stop inetd: 'rcinetd stop', then 'rcinetd start'.
With a double v (no spaces at line start! )

http    stream  tcp     nowait  root    /usr/sbin/httpd httpd   -ivvh /usr/www

I get the following from http://<IP>/cgi-bin/login.cgi

As I said, I have no further clues for you.
You can try resetting all settings to the default values, but you will have to reconfigure everything again. To save that, you can store the current settings in your computer and load then again (perhaps resurrecting the issue...)

The following creates a settings file in /tmp

loadsave_settings -cs
set_2013-08-23_00:55:11.tgz # the name displayed will be different in your case

Now transfer /tmp/set_2013-08-23_00:55:11.tgz to your computer, using ftp/scp, whatever

loadsave_settings -cf # clears all flash-saved settings
reboot # reboot with all settings as defaults, password will be cleared, ssh might not accept this, use telnet to login if the webUI still does not works. This will use DHCP, so the IP might change

The above might not work, as you have Alt-F packages installed, and some settings are also saved on disk in this case and will survive.
If you still have issues after the above, you have to uninstall Alt-F packages, then reboot again:

rcall stop # after logging-in using telnet, if sing ssh you will be kicked off
ipkg -clean # this uninstalls all Alt-F packages and its configuration under folder /Alt-F (the package binaries.not the data you have downloaded), so save any conf files if needed.
reboot

You have now the box as if it was reflashed. As usual with Alt-F, your disk data is still intact.

Can't think of anything else, and I hate to do this kind of things without knowing the issue cause, but I found none!

I went ahead and followed your last suggestion and that appears to have fixed it. I don't know what was going on. I appreciate all your assistance.

Do you have a PayPal link for donations? :)
