When I try to install the FFP-0.7 package I get the following error.

And when I try to install the Alt-F packages, I get the following error:

Installing Alt-F in /mnt/drive

Trying dl.dropbox.com... fail, no Packages file.

The second error complains about not having a working internet connection, but when I SSH to the machine and do 'ping google.com' it seems to work. I'm not sure what the problem is. How do I install both of these things on the DNS-323? Thanks.

Do you have swap active? You need it.
Check it in the Status Page, System section

Thanks, I have now added a 4 GB USB drive (currently formatted as vfat) to the USB drive of the device, and enabled the "Swapping on USB devices:" option in Disk > Utilities, but Swap on the status page still shows as None. How can I enable it on a USB device?

Alt-F supports vfat and NTFS as a convenience for users that have external pen/drives with those filesystems.
Those filesystems should be used exclusively for user data, as they lack some features needed to linux.

So, you can't install Alt-F packages on a vfat or NTFS filesystems. You can only put your music or movies there.

As for swap, it has to be a partition of type "swap", it will be only used for swapping, i.e., work as if it was memory, and will not be able to handle user files.
Creating a partition of type swap means, for non-experts, repartitioning your disk and loosing your data.

Replying to an old topic, because I get the same no space left on /tmp error when trying to install ffp 0.7
Note: Alt-f packages installed fine.

It is not clear to me how to check whether the swap is active. Here is what I have investigated so far...

From Web admin
Status / Mounted Filesystems: sda2 and sda4 as ext2

Disk / Filesystems: sda2 and sda4 as ext2

Disk / Partitioner: sda1 as swap = 0.543 GB

From ssh
top does not show swap as far as I can tell

fstab does seem to have the correct entry:
/dev/sda1 none swap pri=1 0 0

And proc/swaps seems like it is in use:
# cat /proc/swaps
Filename Type Size Used Priority
/dev/sda1                               partition 530108 4552 1

Some background: I have been using ffp 0.5 for years. Today I installed Alt-f RC3 (renamed ffp and fun_plug, then flashed firmware). During the setup wizard, the HDD failed the check and mounted RO. I did the forced fix and then proceeded through the remaining wizard steps manually, and chose the "Do nothing to my drives" option.

Check it in the Status Page, top right, "Swap: used/total MB", or "Swap: none"

From the info that you supply below, swap is active on your system.

What is the issue?

To install ffp-0.7 a 51MB file has to be downloaded into /tmp, which does not reside on disk and uses 10% of the available swap space.
You seem to have only one disk, with one ~500MB active swap partition, thus /tmp has roughly 50MB, barely enough to download the file.
You can confirm this using the 'df -h /tmp' command.

To temporary fix the issue(*), use the command

mount -o remount,size=96M /tmp

now 'df -h /tmp' should report 96MB total and you should be able to install ffp-0.7. Be sure that the 'df' command reports enough Available space before doing it.

You might find an "Incorrect ffp version" message during the install, search the forum for a fix.

(*) at the next reboot, /tmp will again be 50MB, but that is not a problem, as the greater space is only needed once for the downloaded file.
I have fixed that on my sources, increasing /tmp from 10% of swap to 15%, so users with only one disk will not have issues.

Yes, that worked, thank you. Indeed, I kept my second drive out of the NAS for the upgrade as a backup to ensure that I did not lose anything.

I did not get an "Incorrect ffp version" message, I'm assuming that is because I renamed the ffp folders before installing Alt-F?

Thanks again.
