I have used the dns-323 for almost 6 years now, and now I changed the firmware to Alt-f. Everything works good with one exception. I can not understand how I permantly add the two hardrives in the ubuntu machines using fstab. This worked perfectly with  original firmware.

My fstab in the Ubuntu machines looks likes this first my try to make alt-f mount as a  shae in Nautilus and the seconf fron one DNS-323 not converted yet and where the fstab is work.
DNS-323 with alt-f firmware not functional samba shares
//192.168.1.125/Film2    /media/Garderobsdatorn2        cifs    guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0
DNS-323 with old firmware where samba share work
//192.168.1.243/Volume_1    /media/Garderobsdatorn3        cifs    guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

It can be noted it is the fstab on the ubuntu machines I am referring to not the  the dns-323

What am I doing wrong???

I don't understand what do you intend to do? mount on the dns-323 samba shares available in a linux machine? Use Services->Network->smb configure->"Folders to import from other hosts".
Remember to "save settings" after configuration is OK.

fstab contents are not preserved across reboots except for nfs, cifs and davfs filesystems types

Then you must ask on an ubuntu forum :-?
To know the full path of available shares on the network, use 'smbtree -N' on any linux machine.
Is the 'Film2' share "Allow" field set to 'anybody' in the dns-323? You are trying to access it as guest... and the share and folder permissions?

And what is the error you get when you try the mount the Film2 share in the ubunto machine?
"No diagnostics no clues" is my lema

No I want to mount the folders on the  NAS with alt-f firmware on all my Ubuntu machines just as I did with dilink firmware,.. I n dlink firmware I could use the sharename Volume_1 and Volume_2 but it seems to be not usable in Alt-f

It just say this when I try your setup

//dns-323/Public/  /media/Garderobsdatorn1        cifs    guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

Retrying with upper case share name
mount error(6): No such device or address
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)

You are not using a valid share. Use the shares shown by 'smbtree -N'.

I'm not going to continue this on a request by request basis. Please post a log of your attempts, both commands and commands output or error, doing what I did above when showing you that it worked for me.

Ok I understand but smbtree -N gives this answer

\\DNS-323         DNS-323 NAS
\\DNS-323\Users           Users private folder
\\DNS-323\Public (Read Write) Public Area where everybody can read and write
\\DNS-323\Public (Read Only) Public Area that everybody can read
\\DNS-323\Film           Film folder
\\DNS-323\Film2           Film2 folder
\\DNS-323\IPC$           IPC Service (DNS-323 NAS)

Ok maybe I found some clue but when I try to test I got this

xxx@CQ60:~$ smbclient //192.168.1.125/Public
Enter xxx's password:
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

As I told you before, you are not using a valid share name, you should have used

smbclient "//192.168.1.125/Public (Read Only)"

To avoid possible space issues, try with the "Film" or "Film2" shares, see your 'smbtree' output bellow.
And make sure that you have permissions on them (Services->Network->smb Configure, "Allow" field, where a plus sign means a group of users, e.g., '+BT' means all users belonging to 'BT' group are allowed); also, Browseable should be checked, and the *files* and *folders* permissions must be the correct ones -- hitting the 'Browse' button, then the 'Permissions' button in the newly opened window. Read the online help where available, hitting the (?) icon on the page title.

Ok I have had some success))))))))))))))))))))
It was a permission problem  as  the  system is very different from other NAS in my fstab on my desktops I  had to change this to be able to automount on startup with samba

//192.168.1.125/Users    /media/Garderobsdatorn1        cifs    username=xxx,password=xxx,guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0
//192.168.1.125/Film2    /media/Garderobsdatorn2        cifs    username=xxx,password=xxx,guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

But unfortunately only the user folder Users automount on sda, the folder Film2 I have on sdb does not automount although it looks exactly the same on permission in the Alt-f GUI???

The smb info looks like this

xxx@xxx-Aspire:~$ smbtree -N
WORKGROUP

    \\DNS-323                DNS-323 NAS
        \\DNS-323\Users              Users private folder
        \\DNS-323\Public (Read Write)    Public Area where everybody can read and write
        \\DNS-323\Public (Read Only)    Public Area that everybody can read

        \\DNS-323\Film               Film folder
        \\DNS-323\Film2              Film2 folder
        \\DNS-323\IPC$               IPC Service (DNS-323 NAS)
