Hello

Let me share steps I used to setup Syncthing 0.18
  1. Create group 'sync' (Alt-F UI)
  2. Create user 'syncthing' (Alt-F UI)
  3. Add user 'syncthing' into group 'sync' (Alt-F UI)
  4. install Syncthing from Alt-F repo (Alt-F UI)
  5. SSH to your NAS, su and change owner for syncthing with command 'chown -R syncthing /var/lib/syncthing'
  6. Navigate to Alt-F UI - Services - User, check boot option for Syncthing, click  'Start now' and then click on 'Configure' (Alt-F UI)
  7. Click red button to upgrade to 1.18 version
  8. Wait couple minutes...
  9. Open Synching UI with IP from your NAS and port 8088 in your browser: Navigate to Action - Advanced and check ' Insecure Allow Frame Loading' This allows Syncthing to be loaded in frame from Alt-F UI. Close UI
  10. Return to Alt-F UI and check that 'Configure' open Syncthing UI
  11. Setup Syncthing and enjoy Your personal cloud solution :)

All the above should have been done by the syncthing post install or init script, 'rcsyncthing' . Examine /etc/init.d/S81syncthing and /usr/lib/ipkg/info/syncthing.postinst

Hi,

I installed manually using the pre built package from syncthing web page and doing the updates from the syncthing web ui. It's been working fine from some time now. What's the advantage to use the version from alt-f repos?

Just checked and its now on version 1.18.0, Linux (32-bit ARM) "Fermium Flea" Build 2021-06-21

Maybe it shoud, but my several attempts were not completed with success. So that`s I decided to invest time into manual setup.
All these installations were terminated due to absenting user and group

Alt-F does the same, it just downloads and installs the syncthing pre-built arm binary from them (the only Alt-F exception), and doing some adjustments.
You can see what is done looking at /usr/lib/ipkg/info/syncthing.postinst, and what is done to integrate it with Alt-F looking at /etc/init.d/S81syncthing (the check_user call is defined at /etc/init.d/common and creates directories and users)

None for you, which is not afraid using the command line. But Alt-F was created mostly for ms-windows users, that mostly only know how to hit the "Install, Accept, Next, Next,...Launch" buttons"

I never bothered updating to a new version  because its webUI clearly shows an "Update" button.
