Hello,
I've tried to optimize Samba for performance on DNS-320. Here are my findings.

I'm using Samba 4.11.6 installed from Entware.
By default, my speeds are : R: ~ 30 MB/s ; W : ~12 MB/s, which is consistent with other reports I think.

My main modifications to smb.conf are the following ones:
write cache size = 524588
min receivefile size = 16384

This is added to "classical" tweaks, which are:
socket options = IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=131072 SO_RCVBUF=131072
use sendfile = Yes
max xmit = 65536

With these parameters (and especially the first one), I get the following speeds:
R : ~ 60-80 MB/s ; W : ~13 MB/s

This is about the same speeds as the ones achieved with FTP (without encryption), so I guess it's the maximum I can expect.

However, I don't understand why "write cache size" has such an impact on READING (from the NAS to the PC) speed.
I would be curious to know if you experience the same changes.

Best regards

Thanks for posting this. I just installed Alt-F on my DNS-320, and have pretty poor write performance compared to your numbers above. I'm moving a bunch of data over to the unit, and I've been seeing a maximum write speed of about 4.5MB/sec, so I'm interested in using your parameters, but don't know how to install Entware packages and set the configuration in Samba. Is there a guide somewhere that would give me the specifics on doing it?

Thanks!

I've got the same tweak but have arround  R:  35  ~  25 MB/s ; W : 10  ~ 15 MB/s.
Had tried several "write cache size" bigger got worst result, with cpu load 100%+.
What HDD do you have? Raid 1? Raid0?

Thanks for the reply. I'm using a pair of enterprise 2TB drives (WD2003FYYS-02W0B0) in a RAID mirror. I guess my question is how do you actually apply the tweak? I wasn't able to figure out where to go to make the changes.

Hello,
I have two 4 TB Seage Barracuda ST4000DM004-2CV104 hard drives, that are mirrored in Raid 1. Those drives are SMR drives, which might explain the behavior I can see?

Hi,
Yes you have to install them in the samba setup file, but you have first to install the samba entware package from the repository http://bin.entware.net/armv5sf-k3.2 , so that you get Samba 4. You can disable the samba provided with Alt-f. Everything will be installed then under /opt/, where you can tweak manually the relevant setup file. For information, Samba provided with Alt-f has a memory leak, that makes it unable to complete tasks with a lot of files (for example, a backup with Amazon photos).

Best regards,

Adding that repository by inserting the URL in 'FEED' and clicking on Submit then UpdatePackageList I get a "Segmentation fault' error as in the screenshot.
If I disable the repository all's fine again .. any insight?

Is there a step-by-step process guide on this somewhere? I updated the packages list using the URL you gave me, but when I try to install the SAMBA packages, I get this error set:

Nothing to be done An error ocurred, return value: 4.
Collected errors: Cannot find package samba4-server.
Check the spelling or perhaps run 'ipkg update'

So, I connected via SSH, ran the ipkg update command, which succeeded, but still get the error. Not sure how to proceed.

Thanks!

Hello @gilles
Any chance you can run us through the steps to use the other repository? Adding it to the web interface I get errors saying the package is not appropriate for the architecture (I"m on 320 non L) And on the page itself it says segmentation fault :(

You can try to use my current webUI sources, attached.
Save them to a share in the box, say to Public RW, then from the command line execute the following commands:

tar -C / -xvzf /Public/RW/packages_opkg.tgz # adjust /Public/RW to the path where you downloaded the file

That will change the webUI, and it works for me. You will likely be said that you have an outdated installation, upgrade or delete it and restart. To install Entware samba4 you will have to uninstall first Entware samba36. Read the displayed messages carefully and proceed accordingly.

Hey @joao I only had the 'upgrade' button available on Ent-Ware. When I clicked on it I got this message popup
image.png
Which likely was because I had the same source listed twice. I removed the duplicate source, rebooted but still am getting this segmentation fault error. Now I have no list at all:

Try uninstalling Entware using the webUI button to completely remove any leftover from previous installs, then install again. You don't need to reboot.

I did not have samba installed in entware. It was installed in Alt-f section. There is no uninstall button for this or rather it's greyed out

I can see that some samba4 files are installed in /opt/bin/

So before I mess something up I'd like to ask for your guidance to 'upgrade' to samba4. Another question is if the configuration section in the web ui will still work or not for setting shares/permissions etc

Thanks!

I was able to get the SMB 4 installed by uninstalling and reinstalling entware. I'm back to my original question, which is where are those parameters set? I connected via SSH, and looked at the smb.conf file, but those don't exist there. I also looked in the advanced section in the WebUI for Alt-F, and it says that the file was parsed by SWAT, and I can see the entries there. What's the process for modifying those? Thanks so much for your help, and patience. :)

As the Entware webUI says:
   Warning: Entware is alien to Alt-F, conflicts might arise.
   Packages configuration files have to be manually edited.

and under Services->User, Entware, Configure:
   You must NOT enable services that might conflict with Alt-F services and services have to be manually configured.

So, you must know what you are doing.

Everything under Entware is installed and runs under /opt.
The Alt-F smb webUI uses /etc/samba/smb.conf, while Entware uses /opt/etc/samba/smb.conf

For a quick start:
copy /opt/etc/samba/smb.conf to /opt/etc/samba/smb.conf-orig
copy /etc/samba/smb.conf to /opt/etc/samba/smb.conf
edit /opt/etc/samba/smb.conf, comment the "max protocol" line, add/comment/remove lines as per your requirements
Services->Network->smb, StopNow. the Alt-F samba server should be stopped before starting Entware's one, and vice-versa
Services->User->Entware, Configure, smb StartNow. The Status will be reported as stopped, as Entware smb initscript does not supports a 'check'  option
Services->User->Entware, smb, uncheck "Boot Enable". If you want to keep Entware samba running at boot, do the reverse, uncheck Services->Network, smb "Boot Enable"

You don't need to do reboots. None.

If working from the command line, invoking /opt/etc/init.d/S91smb directly, notice that the default path has /usr/sbin before /opt/sbin, so the Alt-F samba binaries will be executed.
Entware's S91smb really needs to be fixed! If you want to see a proper Entware initscript install xupnpd and examine its S94xupnpd. Much simpler.

Further enquiries should be answered by gilles, who started this thread and claims obtaining 60-80 MBs reading from the NAS, which I wan't able to obtain.

Hello,
Sorry for not being as reactive as Joao, who is incredibly helpful. Thanks again to him.

Of course, you should disable samba from alt-f before starting samba from Entware.
You can check if the right samba is working by running /opt/bin/smbstatus . I'm currently running 4.11.6.
ps should also show smbd daemons pointing to  /opt/etc/samba/smb.conf .
So indeed, you have to replace or edit the file smb.conf in /opt/etc/samba .
Here is my smb.conf, that you have to modify to point to your shares.

Hopefully it will work for you, tell me what you get.
Best regards,
Gilles

Hi,
You don't have to remove it, just stopping it is enough. There has to be only one samba running. Once it's stopped, you can proceed with running the one coming from Entware.

Jumping the gun a bit here, is there a reason we're not using samba 4.x in the alt-f section?
Also wondering how I'm going to update my kernel. I did that in ALT-F section but apparently I'm still stuck on 4.4.45

I went through Joao's instructions and added Gille's variables to smb.conf and got 12MB/s writes and 31MB/s reads which is a bit better for writes but more or less the same 30MB/s for reads.
Not sure what I'm missing if anything.

I'm using 2 of these Toshiba drives in Raid1 https://toshiba.semicon-storage.com/ap-en/storage/product/internal-specialty/pc/articles/md04aca-series.html

Thanks, Gilles. I must be doing something wrong. I stopped the SMB service and set it not to start at boot. Is this how you stop the Alt-F SMB? I ask because when I stop it, SMB doesn't work at all. Is there another way to stop the Alt-F SMB that won't stop SMB altogether?

Thanks again, and sorry for all the very basic questions.

@Kojak .. Read Joao's post.
1. you install the Samba 4 from entware. Once done you backup Samba4's smb.conf file and copy Samba3's conf file to the location of Samba4's conf file.
Then you edit it as per what Gilles said.
When done you go in Alt-f and stop SMB service and uncheck the box so it does not start on boot. Then you go in Services > User > Entware (Configure) and start SMB there (and add the checkbox to make it start on boot). It will say it's still stopped but that should not be the case.

That's all you need to do.

I've followed the steps outlined with no effect on my speeds. I took a look at the system log, and found these entries:

May 2 17:55:30 D-Link daemon.err smbd[911]: Unknown parameter encountered: "write cache size"
May 2 17:55:30 D-Link daemon.err smbd[911]: Ignoring unknown parameter "write cache size"

Have I messed up the syntax? This is the entry in my smb.conf file:

        write cache size = 524588

Hello,
I"m sorry it doesn't work for you, but I think those ignored parameters are not normal. Indeed, if I comment out the line "write cache size" in smb.conf, I'm back to 30 MB/s. If I put it back I'm above 60-80 MB/s. In between the two attached screen captures, I only edited smb.conf, and did /opt/etc/init.d/S91smb restart . Same file, same computer, within a few seconds. Of course, I don't see any "ignored parameters" in my log. Maybe you could check with /opt/bin/testparm -v what is understood by samba in your smb.conf file? As far as I'm concerned, there's a line write cache size = 524588 .

Using that from the command line will start Alt-F smbd, not Enteware smbd. The default path set in /etc/profile has /usr/sbin before /opt/sbin.
I advise everyone using Entware to use Bill's Rosenberg /opt/etc/init.d/S91smb, posted a few posts above, as it correctly set the path.

As I said above, on a DNS-325 I couldn't reach 80MBps reading from the NAS using Entware smbd, only 50MBps, against 40MBps with Alt-F smbd.
*However*, I get 80MBps under Alt-F smbd if I enable SMB1 on the webUI, without any further twicks! Your (Gilles)  /opt/etc/samba/smb.conf file has commented the max and min protocol. I don't know that the default protocol in samba 4 is. Can you please redo your Entware smbd throughput tests by setting "min protocol = SMB2"?
You might have SMB1 enabled in your windows machine, and that could explain your figures. Otherwise, only using wireshark packet analyser, which will show what SMB1/2/3 is being used; however, I don't know wireshark and low level network packet details... anyone? Bill?

Hello,
I'm quite positive I'm using Entware smbd. The easiest check is the content of S91smb:

#!/bin/sh
#
# startfile for entware-samba, written by linux.tinkerer at gmail.com
# For Ily's FW of Asus Routers
# store this script in /opt/etc/init.d if you've installed entware

# Prgmname=/full_path/Prgmname
#prgmname1="/opt/sbin/nmbd"
prgmname2="/opt/sbin/smbd"

# configfile=/full_path/configfile
configfile="/opt/etc/samba/smb.conf"

#location of pid-file
#nmbdpid="/var/run/samba/nmbd.pid"
smbdpid="/var/run/samba/smbd.pid"

# Changes from here till the end, use Entware rc.funcs

ENABLED=yes
#PROCS="nmbd smbd"
PROCS="smbd"
ARGS="-D -s $configfile"

PREARGS=""
DESC=$PROCS
PATH=/opt/sbin:/opt/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin

# check and remove stale pid
if ! pidof $PROCS 1>/dev/null 2>&1; then
   rm -f /opt/var/run/$PROCS.pid
fi

. /opt/etc/init.d/rc.func

I don't have a good recollection, but I think I modified it myself.

Concerning protocols:
You can know what the standard Samba4 protocol is with /opt/bin/testparm -v : I get:
 server max protocol = SMB3
 server min protocol = SMB2_02
It's confirmed with /opt/bin/smbstatus that shows a nobody user with SMB3_11.

If I re-enable "min protocol = SMB2", I can confirm with testparm that I get:
server max protocol = SMB3
server min protocol = SMB2
/opt/bin/smbstatus still shows a nobody user with SMB3_11.
Then the  throughput test gives again 60-75 MB/s, which is logical.

Some additional information:
if I try setting min=max=SMB2, i'm not able to connect (which is a bit strange, maybe I have to disconnect the shares or whatever under win10).
On the contrary, when setting min=max=SMB3, /opt/bin/smbstatus indicates again SMB3_11 . I get again 60-75 MB/s.
Based on all this, I think I'm connected with SMB3.

Gilles

Additional information: by rebooting win10, I can connect directly with the different protocols, SMB1 or SMB2. So:

min=max=NT1 : 25 MB/s
min=max=SMB2 (SMB2_10) : 60-75 MB/s

Hi,
very good instructions here, thanks a lot for sharing your experience! I've been able to install Entware (the new one, using the command-line workaround to start the install script that is mentioned in another post), and editing the smb.conf file.
But: I don't see Services -> User -> Entware, so I'm not able to start Samba 4 from the menus. What do I have to do so that the Entware service appears in the User service list? Might be a bit off-topic here, but this is what is missing for me to have Samba running.
Thanks a lot!

Hi Holger,

Did you ever figure this out?

When you click Services -> User, there will be a list of user services and entware should be listed. You should have two buttons: Start Now and Configure, and the Latter will take you to another list of services with checkboxes for boot enabled and buttons to StartNow/StopNow. This is less than ideal imo. I personally just went through this whole ordeal and I found that using Putty to SSH into the box and configuring it from CLI was easier.

If you're still facing this, I hope that helps

Just so others aren't misdirected to a sub-optimal outcome, here's an update with better guidance:

After some further investigation, it seems the S18entware file is supposed to be created from a CGI script "packages_opkg_proc.cgi" (when Entware is first enabled), but as the file S81entware. I guess at some point I enabled Entware and it would have created this file, but the file has since disappeared. Perhaps I can disable Entware and re-enable it again, to get the file back, but I can't find an option to disable Entware. The one I created as described in my last post, probably works fine.

However, just to make things standardised, I recreated the S81entware by manually copying and pasting the relevant bits in the CGI script. I also manually ran the "ln -s" command just after this, to create the /sbin/rcentware file.

Weird... over the past few days, I've been poking around trying to get samba running just right, and it is now. (Hooray!)

However, I've noticed some configure buttons are now missing which had been there at a point in the past few days.

For example Services->Network, I have a button for wsdd2 to StopNow, but not one for Configure.

wsdd2 no configure.PNG

then Services->Network->inetd(configure) brings me to a menu to checkmark enable or configure button, but three are missing that button now: telnet, printer, & swat

Also, going to (Packages...) there are three options: Alt-F, Entware-ng, & ffp; and whichever I select displays "No disks found!"

No disks found.PNG

I'm also finding that "No Disks found!" in (Setup -> Users), (Setup -> Debian), and (Setup -> Folders)

Users and Groups - no disks found.PNG

I'm not one to arbitrarily do things.. My troubleshooting the last few days has been opening files and googling what I didn't know. Maybe tweak config files, but the ones related to samba. Probably, just some stupid mistakes, but I would appreciate it if anyone can point me in the right direction.
