I apologize if this has been answered before (I looked but didn't find it).
I'd like to periodically backup my Alt-F (DNS-320L) NAS to an external USB drive for archival storage. Is there a preferred way to do this?

Under Services -> System you will see Backup.  Click on the configure button and setup rsync, something like this:

Backup Destination FolderCurrent:
Backup Setup
DisableIDTypeRun AsHostFolderBrowseWhenAtRotate
0
1
2
3
Adjust the names and paths accordingly.

For anyone else finding this, the solution turns out to be using the 'Dir' backup method for local backups (see configuration below).  I should have clicked the help button for the setup page first :-)  It documents the various types of backup methods.  The rsync method is meant for backing up remote machines and the requirements for the remote machine to be backed up are well documented in the help screen.
