Most probably there was a USB disconnect or USB reset. Examine the kernel log (System->Utilities, Logs, Kernel log, or 'dmesg' from the command line) for usb or USB disconnect or reset messages, as well as 'sdc' related messages. Do they appear? Better post it.
As the log is limited in length old messages might have disappeared now and you have to replug the usb cable and wait for the issue to happens again.
There is not much one can do, except use a shorter or better USB cable or another USB adapter.
Some adapters/cables are more prone to such errors then others. Remember that linux has general purpose drivers, the one supplied by the vendor is for windows or mac only.
Is the adapter self-powered or does it gets its power from the USB socket?
These might be the major reasons for the device to disappear.
Regarding the 64bit FEATURE_R10 message, that seems to indicate that the filesystem was created with a more modern version of the e2progs utility that activated 64 bit support, as if it were created on a more recent linux system. But you say that you used the Disk Wizard to do it, so I can't understand that.
