I have the DNS-323 with ALT-F and it has been unplugged for a couple years.

When I turn it on it never seems to show up n the network.

What step to connect it to a laptop and get into it.  I seem to remember I have to change the netowkr address of the ip4 adapter on my laptop to some other numbers?

The lights are flashing but no one is home

Hi Jim,

I am no expert on Alt-F but a few things to check. Can you look on your router at the connected devices? Usually at 192.168.1.254. Does it show the DNS-323 as been given an IP address? If you see it listed, run a command prompt and PING the IP address, does it respond?
Can you see anything from the laptop when looking the the network in File Explorer? miniDNLA?
What operating system is the laptop using?

Thank you
It doesn't appear on the router or when I plug a laptop in directly.

I think there is a clue that when I plug the dns323 Ethernet cable into the router, the green light on the router (green and yellow for each cable) flashes green for only 1 second. Then turns yellow.
Using the reset button doesn't help.

Thanks for checking

I suggest that you factory reset your Alt-F DNS.  Do this by pressing the reset button for 20+ seconds.

If it still doesn't work, then I suggest removing the hard disk drives (mark each drive for which slot they were in) and power it on again.  This way it will only be running from the Alt-F firmware rather than possibly loading something incompatible from the disk.

Regarding your lights on your router when you plug in the network cable, I assume you are referring to the link speed lights by the port connection.  The solid yellow color may be normal for your router, you would have to look up the manual for your router to interpret it.  Yellow may indicate that the auto negotiation gave it a 100 Mbs link speed, possibly due to using a CAT-5 network cable.  If you have a CAT-5e or CAT-6 cable, then you should be able to get 1 Gbp speed (possibly a solid green LED for the link).
