I have an NTFS formatted USB drive which I want to copy some data
from. After plugging it in to the USB port it is recognised as I can
see it on the disk utilities page:

usb sdb 2000.4 GB WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0

A directory was also created automatically in /mnt/Elements, but not
files appear there.

So I tried a manual mount and got a "No such device" error.

# mount -t ntfs -r /dev/sdb1 /mnt/Elements
mount: mounting /dev/sdb1 on /mnt/Elements failed: No such device

Any idea what the problem is?

I'm running 0.1RC1 on a Rev-C board.

Is the disk AC-powered? It should, the dns USB port has not enough power for
even 2.5" disks.
Unplug the USB cable, power-up the USB disk, wait a couple of seconds for it
to spin-up, then plug the USB cable.

Solved?

Yes it has AC power. I tried your suggestion but it seems as though it
doesn't spin up until I plug in the USB.

Here's the output from lsusb

# lsusb

and part of dmesg

Does it look like something is wrong?

I checked with my box: Exactly the same behavior.

From looking at /proc/config.gz it seems like NTFS is not compiled
into the kernel of RC1.

So, in short: You can not mount a NTFS file-system.

It's up to Joao to decide whether the space needed for NTFS is still
available.

Hi,

just fyi: I also checked my box (dns-323) and it works well. (Flashed
0.1RC1., installed Alt-F, no any other packeges.)

I thought ntfs-3g uses FUSE so doesn't need to be compiled into the
kernel?

OK it works now! I was having a look at the Alt-F packages and noticed
that ntfs-3g-ntfsprogs was not installed, so I installed that and
rebooted and the disk now mounts via the web interface :)

# mount
rootfs on / type rootfs (rw)
tmpfs on /rootmnt type tmpfs (rw,relatime)

aufs on / type aufs (rw,relatime,si=4193d6f1)

/dev/loop0 on /rootmnt/rootsq type squashfs (ro,relatime)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,relatime)
usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw,relatime,devgid=9,devmode=664)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,relatime)

tmpfs on /tmp type tmpfs (rw,relatime,size=53248k)

devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,relatime,mode=600)

/dev/sda2 on /mnt/sda2 type ext4 (rw,relatime,barrier=1,data=ordered)
/dev/sdb1 on /mnt/Elements type fuseblk
(rw,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,allow_other,blksize=4096)

Thanks all.

hmmm, then I must have made a mistake, as the ntfs-3g-ntfsprogs
package should only be need to create/check/manipulate NTFS; for using
(mounting) only, the base firmware already includes a stripped-down
version of ntfs-3g-ntfsprogs.

Do you mind double checking?
Perhaps only the kernel-modules package is needed, not ntfs-3g-
ntfsprogs? because of the FUSE module?

I do have to correct myself.

I tried to mount a encrypted file-system and this could not work.

ALT-F auto-mounted another disk with a NTFS File system without any
problems.

Conclusion: One should check his facts before posting ;-)

So, I'm sorry about the noise.

I uninstalled the ntfs-3g-ntfsprogs package and rebooted and the drive is mounted automatically again, so there's no problem with the firmware it seems. It's a mystery why it didn't mount automatically before.

I have now realised that I needed -t ntfs-3g not -t ntfs to mount it manually so that explains the "No such device" error I had.
