How can I compile specific program from sources on Alt-F ?

I would like to learn to compile a program on Alt-F , but I have found no specific info about it.
If someone could give some docs about the method, I would download the sources of any obsolete program, (i.e: the latest Transmission for torrent files, that I am interested on) share the results and, if possible, I would publish a tutorial.

I have compiled programs on desktop Linux, but I don't know much about compiling on Alt-F . The tools I used on Linux don't seem to exist , or they behave different.

I have read about the method for creating a new package on the wiki:

But I would prefer to try compiling, if that way is not too awkward.
