Hello,

I have been using 01.RC4.1 on my DNS-320L A3 for a couple years. However, my DNS-320L cannot boot up after attempting to upgrade to 0.1RC5. The upgrade took a long time (more than an hour) and I unplug it. Since then, it couldn't start up. I have reset it and it still not booting up.

Please tell me how to fix it.

Thank you.

Do you remember if you were using http or https when connecting to the box webUI?

Have you set the http server or stunnel to run as standalone servers (i.e. not under inetd control  In Services->Network http/https ?)

There have been some other reports on this subject, and I'm trying to sort out what has happened, so getting anwsers to the above questions are really important.

Meanwhile I'm afraid that you have to solder a serial 3.3 volt usb adapter, which are cheap, to the box and follow a procedure already described in this forum.

Thank you.

Hello Joao,

From memory that was https but I don't exactly remember.

What's the restore procedure?

I was suspecting that having the http/https server running in server mode (not under inetd control, see Services->Network, http, Configure) could be the culprit, as one of the flashing procedures is to stop all services (but not inetd); this means that the web page would stop displaying the flashing progresses or errors, as users have reported.

So I performed some tests under that conditions and verified exactly that, no flash progress was displayed. But the flashing process itself was not terminated, and succeeds.

So, probably you and other users had "just" a bad flash experience, together with a lack of progress indication.

My best advise is to turn the http/https administrative servers under inetd control before upgrading the firmware. I will fix that for the next release and I will update the README firmware upgrade procedure in the download area and issue a warning notice in the News.

If you search the forum for brick or unbrick the 320L or 325 or serial adapter soldering you will find several topics covering that.
It is really simple, but if you are not comfortable with a soldering iron and delicate electronics better ask a friend.

Actually, I am not sure where to begin. What are the high level steps?

Regarding to the soldering, do I need just a USB cable soldered to jp1 on my board? Which cable to which pin? Or soldering a RS232 port to the board and get a RS232 to USB convert?

Thanks.

That has already been addressed here, please search the forum. There are even some pictures.
I attach a photo of mine 320L, but I don't remember each wire function. Notice that the GND wire was soldered to the USB (or network?) metalic case; also, my usb-serial adapter needs to be powered, thus there is an extra (red?) wire.
You need a USB to 3.3V (volt) RS232 adapter and solder at least three wires to the box, GND, Tx, Rx.

Thanks Joao,

I am confused about the physically connection between ShareCenter and the computer.

1. Do we solder a USB port or serial port (DE-9) to 320L?
2. Do we plug the ShareCenter plug to the computer USB port or a serial port?

That will be great if you can provide me a picture of the connection.

Thank you very much.

The box uses a 3 wire serial RS232-C connection, so you could just connect the box to a serial adapter/plug in your PC.
But nowadays most PC don't have such a port, and even if it has one (e.g., an old computer) it will be 5 Volt, not the 3.3 Volt that the box uses.
If your PC has such a port and you want to use it, you need a buy a 5 to 3.3 Volts RS232 adapter.
So, the most reasonable option is to buy instead a USB to 3.3V serial adapter; it has a standard USB connector that you plug into your PC, and a cable with (at least) 3 wires that you will connect/solder to the box.

see http://dns323.kood.org/hardware:serial, it might have pictures there

Hello Phone MTK,

I recently had to buy such a usb to RS232 adapter on eBay to try to recover a SMART tripped Seagate barracuda 7200.11 F3 drive, with no luck. The link below is what I bought, might be helpful but it might work just for a limited time.
that has 3.3v signals, with a VCC of +5, but you do not need that connector, only the TX, RX, GND.

Regards,
Eduardo

Hello João,

I had a CA-42 cable. How do I find out which pins are tx and rx? I assume I only need to connect 3 wires in my CA-42 cable to 2 pins in JP1 and the black wire to the USB case.

Thanks.

For most adapters that's it

in my CA-42 cable

My particular Nokia cable needs to be 3.3V powered from the nas also, but that seems to be an exception.

to 2 pins in JP1 and the black wire to the USB case.

*I* found it easiest/safest to to it that way

Thanks.
