I guess this is slightly stale news by now, but, Pluto and Eris were
not too long ago dubbed "plutoids" instead of dwarf planets, in a news
story which I believe was released June 11, 2008.

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/080611-plutoid-planets.html

So far, Eris and Pluto are the only plutoids.

I happened to notice in the astrological transits on that day, Pluto
and Ceres were in exact opposition to each other, which I found sort
of interesting, because, like Pluto, Ceres was once considered a
planet, and was also "demoted".

Here's an interesting non-astrological article written by a scientist
about Ceres and its history:

http://www.solarviews.com/eng/ceres.htm

And here's the astrological data for when Pluto and Ceres were exactly
opposite each other, in the form of (of course) a copy-and-pasteable
Astrolog 5.40 command line:

-qa June 11 2008 23:39 GMT 0:00W 51:0N

Pluto at 0°03'16" Capricorn
Ceres at 0°03'16" Cancer

Any thoughts on plutoids, or what astrological meaning this opposition
might have, or not have, etc.?

RM: I don't use Ceres because I haven't been convinced of it's value
in astrology yet, but that opposition sounds like it's worth following
up on.

As far as the naming of Pluto goes - and all the nonsense about
degrading it for astrology. It will serve one very useful purpose in
the tropical astrology community - if anyone is not using Pluto the
way it has been used for decades we'll know who's making it and who's
faking it.

I don't have any thoughts on plutoids, however, I continue to treat Pluto as a planet for astrological purposes despite what astronomers claim and then apparently periodically change their minds about the status of Pluto.  At the same time I don't generally use the asteroids in astrological analysis but I do know a little about the mythology surrounding Ceres.

As for the recent transiting opposition between Pluto in Cap and Ceres in Cancer...looking at the bare basics, Pluto rules power and the misuse of power.  Capricorn rules career, status, government, authority and all positions of power in the outside world.  Ceres rules farming, grains (cereals), mothering...  Cancer rules mothering, nurturing, family, home, security.

The meaning of the two bodies in exact opposition would depend in part on their house placements but generally speaking it looks like someone in authority on the day in question was abusing its authority...as in scientists continuing to demote or discount the importance of the two bodies in question.  It brought to my mind the story of Persephone and Pluto.

Seems quite possible. Thanks for these interpretations.

Same here.

I've only rarely noticed interesting-seeming things with Ceres in the
past.

In a post to aamod last year, I interpreted a chart which had Ceres
(and also Eris) rising:
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.astrology.moderated/browse_thread/thread/2b6da1b08c829e69/a0748dcaaadbdd0c?lnk=gst&

It was an event chart, for the date/time/location I posted a reply on
a website to refute someone who was arguing with me and had made some
rather amusing, quite off-base assumptions about me. :-)

It seemed like Ceres in Aries opp. mean lunar apogee Lilith in Libra
in that chart might correlate with the fact that my opponent assumed
for no good reason that I was some kind of empty-headed, hedonistic
(Libra) lowlife floozy (Lilith), with "a couple of kids on the
way" (Ceres). :-)

I agree.

Could be. I've always been astonished whenever I've encountered
anyone who doesn't use Pluto, or thinks it's weakening, etc., though I
guess it does happen that the astrological planets' meanings/
rulerships shift around a bit as new ones are discovered. For
instance, ever since Pluto was found and delineated, I'm guessing
Saturn and Mars are probably not associated with death nearly as much
as they used to be, etc.

A while back I noticed that in a short booklet dating from 1930 on the
topic of astrology and financial speculation which I found (and typed
and put on my site: http://astroblahhh.com/astrology/etexts/speculation/speculation.shtml
), there was even an interpretation of Neptune which sounded like it
might go better with Pluto: "Neptune rules the Rich, the large
Capitalist and the ruler of the Nations."

I don't think I'd associate most rulers of nations with Pluto _or_
Neptune, except maybe horrible dictators (Pluto), and I suppose I
might associate the Dalai Lama with Neptune. But, plutocrats
definitely seem to me like they ought to be associated with Pluto
rather than Neptune (though I also associate wealth with Jupiter).

But before 1930, perhaps plutocrats really were associated more with
Neptune? I haven't read too many old astrology books, though, so
maybe that interpretation is just one lone author's opinion.
