I just picked up a cool looking brown tolex fender hotrod deluxe limited edition. My jag sounds ok through it but I was wondering if the deluxe can be modified so that it has a
better surf tone. Tube change? Reverb tank modification.

The outboard reverb is going to sound much better for surf. You can replace the transformers which will improve the tone. Mercury Magnetics makes a set which you can buy to replace. I noticed a big difference in tone with a Deluxe Reverb Reissue that had Mercury Magnetics transformers put in. Tubes will make it sound better, but not a ton. The stock tubes do suck though. The Fender Groove tubes... yuck. Warning though, the Mercury transformers will probably cost more than you paid for the amp.

I see....but you think playing through the outboard tank along with this deluxe will so alright? Really I just want drippy reverb
and the tone a little less muddy and Im fine for the casual party jamming Im doing. I was hoping the on board reverb could be improved but I guess not huh.

well thats true...Well what I have going with the jag and deluxe isnt bad just a little dry and muddy. Im in Dallas and no one carries a tank in their shop here so that I can experiment....unfortunately.

Your best bet is the outboard tank in combination with your amp for getting the surf sound. That change alone will get you there. You can then go back and change out the speaker, transformer, etc. all you want (if you really want to...or just get a better amp).

If you want an outboard, I may have a brown tolex one for cheap in July. A guy on the boards here may sell me his tweed one when he gets his new one... MAy as well keep them all in the family. PM me if you are intrigued, and as the summer comes I'll keep you posted if its all going down.

I have a HRD amp that I use alone sometimes. Usually I play double amps hooked together after the tank,(hot rod deluxe & Deluxe reverb amp) But I think the HRD can sound just fine with the tank hooked up.

Although the HRD isn't the sound you hear many times on surf albums, so what! If the HRD is what you have play it. Modify it if you want. but just remember that it just will sound like a HRD modified, not a Showman.

Ok...I got it. Sounds pretty good Recroom. Was that "full tank"
as wet as it would go or somewhere in the middle? If you have a clip with the tank all the way soaking wet I would love to hear that.

I own several of Eastwoods Airline re-issues with those marvelous chambered bodies but my signiture stage sound over several decades is the one produced by the strat single coil pickups. I thought it would be an interesting experiment to mount 3 strat style pickups into my white Airline deluxe and see what happened. The combination of the chambered body and the single coils is awesome, very full and woody sounding. No alterations to the guitar body are necessary using rings I found through Allparts that are the same size as humbucker rings.

The other modification I made is replacing the 5 position slider switch with 3 on/off mini-toggle switches. I allways liked that feature on alot of the old Japanese and Italian imports allowing you to add the neck/bridge and all 3 pickup settings to the tonal combinations. Again no body alterations, just a custom plate to mount the 3 mini-toggles into. It seems that chambered and semi-hollow bodies are making a big comeback and I can HEAR why. If you own any you know what Im talking about.

Like its predecessor, the 5150 Deluxe QM features a modified Strat-style basswood body with a quilt maple top and deeper upper body curve. The graphite-reinforced bolt-on quartersawn maple neck features a comfortable modified "C" profile, hand-rubbed satin urethane back finish, heel-mount truss rod adjustment wheel and color matched "hockey stick" headstock with EVH logo decal. Built for smooth and speedy playability, the 12"-16" compound radius ebony fingerboard has 22 jumbo frets and cream dot inlays.

While the famed striped original had a single humbucking bridge pickup only, the all-new 5150 Deluxe is outfitted with an HH pickup configuration controlled by a three-way toggle on the upper bout. The custom designed EVH Wolfgang Alnico 2 humbucking bridge pickup delivers the perfect amount of punch and articulation with sweet sustain and thick chunky rhythms in a perfectly balanced EQ curve. The EVH Wolfgang Alnico 2 humbucking neck pickup serves up no-nonsense, balls to the wall overdrive and endless sustain without skimping on articulate cleans when the volume is rolled down. A custom designed low friction volume knob creates even-volume tapering for the smoothest volume swells, while the high friction tone knob will stay in place even if accidentally bumped. An added new feature comes in the way of a lower bout kill switch, allowing you to mute your guitar for those stutter, rhythmic effects - think "You Really Got Me."

Decked out with a "dive-bomb" certified EVH-branded top-mount Floyd Rose bridge, the locking tailpiece features fine tuners for each string and a patented EVH D-Tuna for switching back and forth from drop-D to standard tuning in an instant.

A stylized modern spin on a fan favorite, the 5150 Deluxe is sure to stun with its rippling quilt maple top dressed in a vivid Purple Daze finish with all-chrome hardware, including the EVH-branded Gotoh tuning machines.

Cosmetic Condition: A great modified player's guitar with a cool vintage vibe! Various nicks, chips, dents & dings; surface scratches & finish blemishes. The original cherry finish has faded into brown, although you can still see remnants of the cherry in certain spots, particularly under the pickguard & a little on the back.

Neck: Slender profile mahogany neck with nicely aged cream side-dots. Rosewood fingerboard with mother of pearl block inlays. Original frets are in great shape with hardly any wear. Unoriginal Grover Rotomatic tuners in perfect working condition. Neck is straight & truss rod works fine. 1 9/16" nut width; 24 3/4" scale length.

Pickups: Unoriginal Seymour Duncan humbuckers. The pickup cavities were routed a bit to fit the full-size humbuckers. Neck is a Duncan Custom - 13.06K ohms; Bridge is a JBL - 15.62K ohms. Dual volume & tone controls with black speed knobs. Unoriginal pots date to '97 with filter caps added; unoriginal Chandler back cover. 3-way pickup selector switch with unoriginal kill switch & 3-way tone filter switch.

Playability / Sound: Nice, low action - the guitar has been set up by our tech with a fresh set of .10-.46 gauge D'Addario strings. Smooth playing neck is very comfortable; killer humbucker tones! The after-market tone switch acts a lot like the 3-way tone switch on a Gretsch.
