1. Praise for Dastaar: Defending Sikh Identity

I have greatly enjoyed screening Dastaar: Defending Sikh Identity
across the country, and now internationally with its Canadian premiere
at the Toronto Spinning Wheel Film Festival (an incredibly well-run
festival, I must say) two weekends ago. Getting a live response and
feedback is incredibly encouraging. But what's just as great is when I
get an unexpected email from someone who has seen the short -- such as
this one I got today, from a librarian in Minnesota:

"This 12-minute short packs a real punch: a mini-history lesson, a
badly needed cultural awakening, and an optimistic finish that lets us
see democracy in action. I particularly liked the montage in the
middle, with the previous ethnic groups that have struggled to gain
acceptance in this country, while the girl explains how this is
essentially their turn in this cycle -- it not only situates this
culture in a historical tradition, but it gives all of those previous
struggles an immediacy which is surprisingly palpable." - Charles M.

Charles intends to introduce the film to his local elementary school as
an educational tool for promoting tolerance. If you would like to find
out more about how Dastaar can be used to build tolerance in your
community, through schools, libraries and other organizations, please
email me at ke...@alsolikelife.com.

3. Dastaar part of special exhibit on Sikh Americans at Wing Luke
Museum in Seattle

I am very honored to announce that Dastaar: Defending Sikh Identity is
included as a video installation in a special exhibit on Sikh Americans
at the Wing Luke Asian Museum in Seattle. This exhibit, among the
first of its kind, displays the history of Sikhs in America and
educates the public about the Sikh faith and its values. The exhibit is
co-sponsored by the Sikh Coalition. The exhibit runs through April 16,
2006, so you have plenty of time to make your way to the fair city of
Seattle! For more information on the Wing Luke Museum visit

4. Warrior Saints benefit screening 11/28

I am pleased to report an upcoming milestone in my
documentary-in-progress, WARRIOR SAINTS, which charts my personal
journey through the world of Sikhism. As my Artist Mentor Project with
Film/Video Arts draws to a close, we will be having a benefit screening
of 20 minute teasers from myself and the three other AMP 2005 honorees,
Noelle Brower, Janice Wilde and Georgia Gruzen. This screening is free
for all F/VA members, so if you happen to be one you have no excuse but
to attend! Additional admissions are as yet to be determined due to
limited space -- but I just wanted to announce that I am making
signficant progress on this production. I will soon be eligible for
fiscal sponsorship, which means that tax-deductible contributions can
be made to this project! You can be sure I will let you know when that
day comes!
