YR Toastmasters Club Recognized as “Distinguished Club”: Two members of Yanbu Refinery TMC “Abdullah Alwani” and “Rabea Saggaf” were certified as “Competent Communicators” by the “Toastmasters International District 79” after completing the program requirements. In addition, “Abdullah Filimban” was certified as “Advanced Leader Silver”. Consequently, Yanbu Refinery TMC was recognized by the Toastmasters District 79 as the “Distinguished Club” for the year 2009-2010.

JR Participation in the World Environment Day: During June 2-5, 2010, Jiddah Refinery participated in the World Environmental day in Jeddah organized by Environmental Protection Department. During the event, JR environmental coordinators presented the refinery’s efforts to maintain a world class environment standard.

YR Demolished Old Gas Station: Yanbu Refinery demolished the old Gas Station in order to comply with the Environmental Regulations and preserve the groundwater from hydrocarbon contamination.  The two Gasoline underground tanks were lifted up safely, inspected and no leak or damage to the environment was observed. This action led to the closure of one minor environmental performance assessment (EPA) recommendation.

JNGLF’s Seminar on Medical Role in Attending Traffic Accident: A presentation titled “Medical Role In Attending Traffic Accident” was delivered to Ju’aymah NGL Fractionation personnel and 15 other employees from Industrial Security Forces on the proper way to handle traffic accident injuries. Lesson learned from previous incidents were also shared during the seminar.

YNGLF Universal Remote Power Racking Robot System:  Yanbu NGL Fractionation received two Universal Remote Power Racking Robots to be used to rack in/out the power circuit breakers inside YNGLF plants’ substations remotely.  The two Robots were tested and commissioned as pilot program in compliance with Corporate ARC Flash Mitigation Program recommendations.

RTR and ES Launched the Plant Integrity Assurance Framework: On June 7, 2010, Engineering Services (ES) and RT Refinery launched the new Plant Integrity Assurance Framework (PIAF) concept to integrate all key programs in one framework that ensures operating the plant within its safe limits. The first application started on RTR CCR Plant J-24 where 20 experts from ES along with 8 engineers from RTR will review the plant from all aspects, identify deficiencies, develop solutions and build the integrity framework. 

RT Zero Anchor Integrity Improvement Progress Status: Improvement activities at RT Refinery Zero Anchor area are in-progress. Replacement of defective portions on BRT-2 and KRT-2 crude lines, demolishing of 2 kilometers of idle piping and execution of 50% of inspection worksheets items were completed. Inspection survey continues to identify deficiencies such as cracks on ring girder supports on several lines and thinning of a scrapper receiver.

RTR ESD System Power Supply Replaced: RT Refinery safely completed the replacement of eighty (80) ESD system power supplies. This is part of the refinery proactive program to enhance the plant reliability and avoid plant shutdown due to ESD power supply failures.

RTR 30” Arab Medium Crude Line (T-12) Defective Sections Replaced:  On May 19, 2010, RT Refinery in coordination with OSPAS, isolated 30” Arab Medium Crude Line (T-12) to replace the defective sections. Maintenance activities were completed and it returned to service today on June 13, 2010.

RTR Pilots SAP T&I Management System (TIMS) Solution:  RT Refinery held a meeting with Corporate Maintenance Systems Team in preparation for the piloting of TIMS Solution that expected to streamline and optimize T&I planning. This system is an initiative from Maintenance Council where RT Refinery played a major role in its development. TIMS solution will be piloted at RTR by mid of June 2010 prior to rolling it companywide in January 2011.

Jeddah Refinery High MTBE in Export Naphtha:  On June 5, 2010, Jiddah Refinery exported Naphtha, at Tank 14, experienced high MTBE of 434 ppm against 50 ppm maximum.  Preliminary investigation indicated that the cause is attributed to processing crude containing slop hydrocarbon with MTBE.  Communication was established with OSPAS & PSMD upon which customer acceptance was obtained and the cargo was loaded with 134.0 MB on June 8, 2010. Further investigation will be carried out to confirm the root cause and to prevent re-occurrence.

JR’s Corrosion Workshop to Address Several Topics and Issues in Field:  During June 6-7, Jiddah Refinery conducted a two-day corrosion workshop to address several topics and issues in the field of process and offsite corrosion. Disciplines from JR, CSD, P&CSD and Best Practices participated in the workshop and exchanged practices.

JNGLF MOD-IV Fin-Fans Re-tubing Status:   Ju’aymah NGL Fractionation MOD-IV fin-fans repair work is in progress as planned with 90% completion.  Up to date, a total of 127 out of 130 bundles were re-tubed at the designated repair shops, out of which, 126 bundles were received at site, and 115 were re-installed.

JNGLFD Instrument Scraping of Ethane Reproduction Line (JSDETH-):  On June 8, 2010, Ju’aymah NGL Fractionation conducted an instrument scraper run through the 14’’ Ethane Reproduction Pipeline (JSDETH-1) to validate the pipeline integrity.

JNGLF R84–Rerun Depentanizer System T&I:  Saudi Chevron (third party) De-Pentanizer system was taken out of service for a scheduled T&I starting June 3, 2010. The system is planned to be back in service July 1, 2010. This T&I is scheduled to coincide with SCP (C6+ customers) T&I, therefore, the hexane production (C6+) was completely seized and all NG production is being transferred to Ras Tanura.

RTR Upgrade 61 MB of AGO and Generate $63M: On June 8, 2010, RT Refinery upgraded 61 MB of AGO from the fuel oil pool. The quantity was exported to Jeddah Refinery as a feedstock for the FCC, resulting in an additional revenue of approximately $63M.

JR Upgrade 6 MB of LSRN and Generate $63M: On May 31, 2010, Jiddah Refinery upgraded 6.0 MB of LSRN to Gasoline pool by utilizing the giveaway in the octane of imported Gasoline. This activity resulted in a total realized benefit of $83M.

JNGLF’s Optimize the Plant Equipment Utilization: Ju’aymah NGL Fractionation shutdown the 500 HP motor (R83-GM-201) Propane rundown pumps and transferred the C3 system pressure to the refrigeration unit as part of JNGLF’s equipment utilization optimization. This activity resulted in power saving of $50M/yr.

YNGLF Overhauled 24” Firewater Isolation Valve and Saved $122M: On June 4, 2010, Yanbu NGL Fractionation overhauled a 24” firewater isolation valve instead of replacing it and avoided a cost of $122M as a result.

NACAU Participation in Terminal Department’s Field Supervisors Workshop: On June 8, 2010, R&NGLF’s Northern Area Contracts Assistance Unit (NACAU) participated in delivering a training session about Contracting Concepts, Policies and procedures for 16 supervisor during the Field Supervisors Workshop that organized by Terminal Department. This is to promote Terminal Department’s new field supervisors’ knowledge and understanding of contracting processes, procurement and administration.

RTR Conducts MVC Operator Training Sessions: RT Refinery conducted two training sessions on Multi-variable Controller (MVC) for 20 board operators. MVC concepts, design and how to properly operate MVC applications to maximize plant economics were the main topics of the sessions.

RTR Shares Safety Relief Valve Knowledge: On May 29-30, 2010, RT Refinery relief valve technical advisor conducted two safety relief valve workshops at Riyadh Bulk Plant and SSSP for operators, maintenance engineers, inspectors and relief valve technicians. The workshops addressed the safety, maintenance, operation and best practice of the safety relief valves.

RTR Laboratory Sampling Certification Program: 
RT Refinery Laboratory completed the Sampling Certification Program for all RT Refinery 497 operators.  This program was initiated in June 2009 with the objective to improve safety, reliability & integrity of refinery’s products sampling.  In addition, the program also covered 50 operators who are presently under the Refinery Basic Operator Course and 25 operators from Abu Safa & Qatif Producing.

RTR Company Policies and Procedures Awareness Program: On May 29, 2010, RT Refinery conducted an in-house full day Awareness Program in the company policies and procedures for more than 100 to provide an overview of the company operations and policies in the fields of; Personnel, IT, Purchasing, Career Development and Security. This ongoing effort will continue in a quarterly basis to cover all new / young employees and works as a refresher for current employees.

RR Conducts Special Safety Workshops:
During June 6-7, 2010, Riyadh Refinery organized special safety sessions on Behavioral Safety and Situations of Potential Accidents in coordination with international safety organizations like World Class Safety Systems and DuPont.

JR’s Human Resource Sessions: On June 6, 2010, R&NGLF’s Technical Support Consultant Mark Bechtold conducted two HR sessions to promote Operational Excellence concept. The first session titled “Coaching for High Performance” was attended by division heads and the second session titled “Building High Performing Teams” was attended by the Operational Excellence Pillar team members.

Refinery Process Specialty Course at JRD: During June 5-9, 2010, Jiddah Refinery hosted a course titled “Storage Blending and Transfer Course” for 8 operators as part of Refinery Process Specialty Course in coordination with Training Department. This course aimed to increase operators’ knowledge and awareness on Tank Farm and Marine Oil Movement Activities.

YR KT Program Advisory Committee Meeting: On June 5, 2010, Yanbu Refinery held the first Knowledge Transfer (KT) Program Advisory Committee meeting to discuss its progress. The KT Program provides a structured mechanism to accelerate the knowledge transfer to young employees by providing technical competency assessments. The meeting revealed good progress and the committee provided guidance to KT specialists to reinforce the implementation model.

YNGLF Black Belt Certification in Lean SIX SIGMA: Yanbu NGL Fractionation employee Waheed Sagga obtained the Black Belt certification in the Lean SIX SIGMA after completing and presenting his final project to Organization Consulting Department (OCD) and to Gas Operations BI-19 Process Improvement Team. The project title is “Reduce Cycle Time and Improve Manpower Utilization for BI-19 Capital Projects at YNGLFD”.

YNGLF Participation in Quest for Operational Excellence Forum in Riyadh: During June 8-9, 2010, Yanbu NGL Fractionation engineers Mohammed R. Tayeb and Abdulatif M. Ansari delivered two technical presentations in the Quest for Operational Excellence Forum in Riyadh titled “New Repair Methodology for Pressure Vessel Damaged Anchor Bolts” and “Single Point of Failure Analysis”.

YNGLF International Certifications for EIU Inspectors:  Yanbu NGL Fractionation’s Engineering Inspection Unit employee Mohammed A. Al-Abdoh, #236388, has successfully passed the examination for CSWIP 3.1 Welding Inspector and certified as a welding Inspector Level 2. So far this year, 14 employees gained total international certifications within the unit.

RR Host the Quest for Operational Excellence Forum: During June 8-9, 2010, Riyadh Refinery organized and hosted the Quest for Operational Excellence Forum, which was sponsored by the Executive Director of Refining & NGL Fractionation.  Six keynote speeches, 18 presentations and four panel discussions were conducted offering collaborative platform for sustaining operational excellence. More than 350 representatives from 63 departments and 17 admin areas as well as delegates from Saudi Aramco Joint Ventures and reputable international companies like, ExxonMobil, DuPont and World Class Safety Company. attended the forum.

Work Order Process Enhancement Using Six Sigma

Abdullah has completed a process improvement project titled “Maintenance Work Order Cycle Enhancement”, using lean six sigma (LSS) methodology and was certified as LSS green belt holder. The project was started on November 2009 and went through several phases to reduce the Work Order Turnaround Time (WOTAT) from 214 to less than 90 days. Implementation phase was then followed to action all project recommendations, which resulted in achieving a reduction in WOTAT to 107 days as of April 2010.
