2015 has been a tumultuous year for the trade union movement, especially the largest trade union federation Cosatu. Unlike previous years where major strikes dominated the headlines, this year it was the political differences that have been simmering amongst the leadership of Cosatu since 2011 came to a head and were concluded at Cosatu’s National Congress held recently. Its biggest affiliate, NUMSA and now former general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, will remain outside of Cosatu for the foreseeable future. There is also talk now of the formation of another trade union federation. In tomorrow’s show we assess the labour movement in 2015 and look towards its prospects in 2016.
