October is Public Transport Month and for most workers in South Africa, public transport is an essential service. But over the years it seems that instead of improved public transport, it has actually deteriorated. This is despite several government initiatives to improve public transport. Workers and members of the public regularly complain about late and overcrowded trains, overloaded and dangerous taxis, taxi violence, problems of their personal security and crime, public transport being far from their homes and workplaces, the high cost of transport etc. At times this frustration by commuting workers even results in arson attacks on trains.
