Unlike the full version of PhotoPlus, PhotoPlus Starter Edition does not support 64-bit high color images, has no studio for editing RAW images and has no HDR photo merge feature. Other restrictions of PhotoPlus Starter Edition include no dedicated studios for fixing photos (PhotoFix), and extracting images (Cutout Studio). Plus no Filter Gallery or features for batch processing collections of images.

Serif's PhotoPlus Starter Edition is a freeware image editing and photo enhancement suite that competes with Photoshop and similar tools. Although PhotoPlus Starter Edition lacks some of the dedicated tools of the pro version, it still does a lot, including adjusting, resizing, retouching, and modifying digital photos and other images.

This main rivalry with Photoshop Elements is emphasised by Serif PhotoPlus X5's new Organiser application. It fills exactly the same role as the Elements Organizer, bringing together all your photos into a centralised catalogue, where you can apply tags to photos, create smart albums based on specific search criteria, locate your photos on a map and even stack related photos so that they don't become separated.

You can open photos in Serif PhotoPlus X5 direct from the Organiser, and open the Organiser to find photos from within PhotoPlus X5. When you save a new version of a picture it appears in the same folder as the original in the Organiser, although it doesn't offer to stack the new version with the existing picture (Elements does, which is very useful).

My opinion: PDN was not merely a photography magazine, it was also a trade journal targeting professional photographers. Continuing online is understandable but a complete cessation? Trade journals exist with high subscription prices which reflect exclusivity and indispensable content worth paying for because as trade journals, they provide content necessary for earning a living or a better living.
I think PDN's failure began when the early editors whose concentration was on the effective running of a small business (technology, property rights, lease vs. buy, own a studio vs. daily rental, pertinent tax laws, etc.) were replaced by those more sensitive to social issues better covered elsewhere. Fun to read perhaps but not necessary to survive. PDN just wasn't addressing enough issues needed by photographers trying to survive in a demanding and difficult business. The editors of PDN lost focus on what a trade journal was for.
Don't be what you want, be what is needed. Survive.

I cancelled my subscription a few years back, when PDN started pushing politics and lifestyle choices in every issue. I use to enjoy the magazine until it seemed they were more concerned in shaping my idea of what society should accept vs. printing ideas that would assist me in boosting my photography biz. Sad to see it go, but in reality the magazine's original purpose disappeared a long time ago.

There was once a whole section of photo magazines in Barnes and Noble now it has dwindled to almost nothing. PDN was the last photo publication I subscribed to so ends an era soon to be followed by the camera companies!

I had the rangefinder magazine for years as print version before Nielsen took over and converted a formerly informative photo journal into a pure commercial advertising format focused on wedding photography. That was the moment when I left the journal and journals published by this group in general.

I remember the halcyon days of the 80's when we waited every month for the new issue of whichever of several photography magazines we subscribed to. I can still recall being amazed when they tested the Pentax ME Super!

Photography magazines in print are nice. Camera gear magazines in print are somewhat of a waste. Aperture and BJP did well in focusing more on photography and less on gear. Nothing against gear-talk but if I want to find out about a camera I'm much better served online. If I buy a print magazine I want something beautifully printed that's worth holding on to.

Mr Bolton if I see one more british camera magazine cover with a generic coloured landscape, a swan or a bridge or rubbish like that i swear I'm going to vomit. The best magazine in the world for photography is French PHOTO magazine a testostarone fuelled music of girls, war, and geometric delights with a bit about cameras at the back. Almost doesnt matter that it's in French.

Not very surprising.
As a professional photographer in New York, we used to read this magazine all the time, cover to cover. But then it turned to uninspired content for the most part. Seems they gave up years ago to be honest.

As well, most of the photographers my team has interviewed (for editorial) say the same thing- they don't have much in terms of connections in NYC - this place can be cold, from a 'I don't want you to know what i know' aspect.

Lomography's LomoChrome '92 is designed to mimic the look of classic drugstore film that used to fill family photo albums. As we discovered, to shoot with it is to embrace the unexpected, from strange color shifts to odd textures and oversized grain.

The LowePro PhotoSport Outdoor is a camera pack for photographers who also need a well-designed daypack for hiking and other outdoor use. If that sounds like you, the PhotoSport Outdoor may be a great choice, but as with any hybrid product, there are a few tradeoffs.

The Photoplus Expo which used to be in Javitts Center in New York City I sadly found out is no more :(. I believe it is being replaced with Create NYC in Brooklyn. My understanding is a smaller venue oriented more towards workshops, photowalks....and a mininum fee of $150 to participate! How sad.

It is generally true that in person shows/conventions are becoming less of a "thing" in all fields. Still sad to see it go. It was an enjoyable and interesting event. I never really had an interest in the workshop/photowalk aspect which it seems is the focus of this new version.
