As Salaamu Alaikoum,
O you who
believe! Do not
put yourselves forward
in the presence of
Allah and His Prophet and
fear Allah. Verily Allah
is All-Hearing and All-Knowing." [Surah al-Hujuraat
49:1]
"Verily, it is indeed
Satan that makes you do evil and say things about Allah (or His deen) of which
you have no proper knowledge." [Al-Baqarah
2:169]
"Say (O Muhammad (peace
be upon him)): indeed the things that my Lord has forbidden are: (and from them
is) saying things about Allah of which you have no knowledge". [Al - A' araaf
7:33]
One of the things we try to stress to the
students of Sunnahfollowers is to be careful using the word "haram" because only
Allah has the authority to make things Haram. Also we stress the importance of
being careful to not think you can teach yourself Islam. Too many Muslims today
think that they can teach themselves, so they read a hadith or a verse of the
Quran and then mis-interpret it to mean something that it did not mean. Allah
warns us against this and doing this is a form of Association, so we must fear
Allah and stop mis-interpreting hadiths and using the word "haram" for something
that is not.
Many women have confronted me with the issue of a
woman wearing her hair in a ponytail or a bun. Many women are saying that this
is haram and they are using the following hadith from Sahih Muslim. I want you
all to look at the transliteration of this hadith and read it
carefully:
Abu Huraira
reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) having said this: Two are the
types of the denizens of Hell whom I did not see: people having flogs like the
tails of the ox with them and they would be beating people, and the women who
would be dressed but appear to be naked, who would be inclined (to evil) and
make their husbands incline towards it. Their heads would be like the humps
of the bukht camel inclined to one side. They will not enter Paradise and
they would not smell its odour whereas its odour would be smelt from such and
such distance.
First of all, there is
no mention made here of it being haram for a woman to wear her hair in a
ponytail or a bun. In fact this hadith does not address what is lawful or
unlawful for a woman to do with her hair at all. There is no mention of a bun or
volume or any of that. Instead it is speaking of one of the people of the
hellfire whom the prophet had not yet seen... and those are women who have
clothing on but are still naked.
Only a person who lacks
reading comprehension skills would read this and think it to mean anything else.
My suggestion: fear Allah people! Instead of you women arguing and bickering
over how high a sisters hijab is because she has more hair than you.. instead
focuss on the point that is made here which is: to be dressed and still
naked.
Many of you woman are
dressed and still naked. When you put on short tops with tight fitting jeans,
you are the woman spoken of here. When you wear see through hijabs, you are of
the women mentioned here. When you refuse to wear hijab at all you are of the
women mentioned here. When you tie belts around your waist to emphasize your
shape, you are of the women mentioned here. Again this has nothing to do with
the volume of your hair!!
Fear Allah sisters and
stop allowing your jealousy of one another to cause you to fall victim to the
shaytaan!
One of the reason why
there will be more women in the hellfire is the fact that they are envious of
one another. Get over this!
In reality, this hadith
when the narrator mentions the head being like the hump of the camel, many
scholars of hadith say this is referring to the punishment that Allah will
inflict upon such women on the Day of Judgement. He will put them in hell and
cause their head to take on this appearance as a means of inflicting more
punishment and pain to the woman for not dressing the way Allah
commanded.
