I don't know who is taking what, so I've attached first day reading materials for Contemporary Poetry. Contemporary Novel people: I have an article by Aldous Huxley, the author of
Brave New World, which we'll be reading this term. By way of introduction, I plan to discuss Huxley's article "The Doors of Perception." I was going to send it, but I can't bring it up on the screen. Meanwhile, you can just google "huxley doors perception" to get the full text yourself. It's about 15 pages long. People who took Romantic with me in the Fall will recognize some of the main ideas, one of which is how individuals are able to reach an altered state of consciousness. He talks a lot about a drug, mescaline. In the end, however, he does not advocate the use of chemicals; rather he gives us ideas about how we can train ourselves to see what lies beyone social constructions of reality. Rember Blake's

Also, people who are not taking Contemporary Poetry might nevertheless want to look at the handout for the first week. There are a few definitions and then a long poem by Natalie Handel, the Palestinian-American poet who was here this past semester for Palfest.,
