in doing some additional background research on semantics, onotologies, etc. i ran across this today:
Controlled Vocabularies
AND
eXchangeable Faceted Metadata Language
both touch on the notion of a kind of "closed space" that encompasses a subject/topic. The first is an information architecture concept (which mentions dublin core, schema.rog, etc.and XFML).
the second is a (now dormant) attempt to create an XML/DSL for sharing metadata and indexing information on the web.
both are distant relatives to the ALPS idea.
i've been finding lots of encouraging material in the Information Architecture space (thanks to @koriym for the pointers) and thought i'd share it with the list.
