Hi folks, please welcome Mike Harlow who is joining our intermediate mentor group. Mike is transferring to Seattle from the Kitsap intermediate climbing course.

Mike, perhaps you could reply with a brief introduction of yourself, your climbing experience, and goals?

We just had two practice sessions for the intermediate review FT. Brian is organizing a makeup session for folks who can’t make the regular ropes & anchors FT dates.

What else would you guys like to do? Are there any routes that you want to climb this summer, perhaps as mentored leads?

Rich

Look forward to meeting you Mike.

Maybe Olympus? Rainier by Kautz or Fuhrer Finger/Thumb?  Mt Adams by North Ridge?  Something in the Picket Range?

I’d second the Kautz Route on Rainier, the Pickets, and any route on Mt Adams.  I’d add the Forbidden Traverse, Mount Stuart, Eldorado...

Welcome to the group Mike,

Some of the climbs I've been thinking about as a mentored lead or otherwise: W Ridge Prusik, E Ridge Forbidden, W Ridge Stuart (done it once before, worth doing again), North Ridge Adams, NE Butt of Chair.  Some ski tours: Jim Hill, Rock Mountain, Slot and Crooked Couloirs, Life is Good Couloir at Washington Pass behind Wallaby Mtn, ski descent Fuhrer Finger.

Hi Rich.

The mentor practice made the eval a breeze so I am officially an intermediate  now. Welcome Mike (fellow Kitsap member).

Climbing this summer. I only know the popular climbs that folks talk about. I would like to climb almost anything. Maybe Adams, Olympus, Glacier Peak, Baker, multipitch in the Liberty Group (or somewhere similar with less people), I would even put my skis on for a tour. Summit block climbs at the end of a challenging approach - Ingalls peaks (3) with travese in one day.

Thanks

Steve

Hello all,

Thanks for all the welcomes.  I’m looking forward to meeting everyone.

I’ve resided and owned an auto repair business in Bremerton for many years.  I had hiked sparingly for a long time and then transitioned into mountaineering.

I’ve been in the Kitsap program for the last two years and it just isn’t as fully developed and defined and lacks the depth of leadership that the Seattle branch has.  I volunteered to help instruct on several basic FTs this year and regret not continuing here but I feel the need to attempt to complete the formal intermediate program in order to become a fully qualified leader.  Recently,  the climbing chair leader has refocused his efforts along with some additional modifications to the program and I don’t feel comfortable attempting to complete it here amid what I perceive as an uncertain future.

Various Olympic climbs I’ve done are Olympus, Stone, The Brothers south and north summits(but not the traverse), Washington, Constance and others, in the Cascades, Baker, Shuksan, Rainier(DC route), and Clark Mountain(Walrus Glacier).  I’ve only done just some basic trad climbs as a second and that’s where my recent focus has been.  Mostly gym climbing along with some outdoor sport routes involving a moderate number of leads.  I’m also signed up for the 2014 Seattle Crag Course.

Mike
