Problem connecting to the AlphaGrid

I just got my Alphagrip. When I plugged it into my laptop (Dell D620
running Windows XP),
the Hardware Wizard window appeared. I clicked by the instruction, and
it
reached to a "Cannot Install this Hardware" window.

But the AlphaGrip works ok with my desktop computer. So the device
seems to be ok. When I plugged it into my desktop, I watched carefully
the process. First the USB hub driver was installed, then the keyboard/
mouse drivers.

When I plugged it into my laptop, I only saw the installation of USB
hub driver. It failed then, which prevented the later stage to be
installed.

Then in Device Manager, I see yellow entries of USB hub, keyboard,
mouse, likely corresponding to the failed attempt to connect to the
AlphaGrip.

I have done many things, trying to fix the problem, but to no avail. I
upgraded from XP SP2 to XP SP3; no help. I restarted my laptop many
times; no help. I tried to pick a device driver instead of letting the
automatic detection to find one; no help. I changed to another USB
cable; no help.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I just want to add that my AlphaGrid works perfectly ok with other 4
computers I plugged in. So the problem is most likely to be the
Windows XP system of my laptop.

I really like this device, and hope it will dominate the world in the
future.

Unfortunately, I don't have a suggestion for fixing the problem.

I just wanted to let you know that I use the alphagrip on both a
laptop and a desktop running Windows XP SP3, so I don't think the
operating system is the issue.

Hope that you can get it working.

I will need to reinstall the system eventually, but not for now.

I have also tried to use the XP installation CD to repair my laptop,
but it complained that my system (Windows XP, SP3) is newer than what
the CD contains (Windows XP, SP2). Well, that is the downside of
upgrading to SP3.

These people had trouble with devices incorporating hubs too:

There is a bios option for the Integrated USB Hub's compatibility
mode. Try toggling it
and after reboot, shutdown, and power on again, so that the changes
take effect.
(cold restart neccessary because of bios bug)

Otherwise, the guy in the above link had luck with Vista ;)

Tried all these. No help.

What I did:
1) upgraded the bios from A09 to A10
2) upgraded the chipset driver
3) toggled the USB compatibility mode in bios setup, and shutdown and
start.

My AlphaGrip is still not working with my Dell D620 laptop.

I have upgraded my laptop (a new Dell Vostro with Windows Vista) and
have no more connection problem. I am using my AlphaGrip every day
while riding my elliptical trainer. Thanks to everyone who helped me.
