Unionization efforts in Pittsburgh are continuing, with roughly 500 workers at well-known city museums recently announcing their intent to form a union and join the United Steelworkers. The museums include the Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and the Carnegie Science Center. The United HCL Workers of Pittsburgh, one of the first NLRB-recognized unions of Google contract employees, released a statement of support on July 2. A copy of the HCL statement appears below.

United HCL Workers of Pittsburgh statement of support

To the workers at the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh,

The United HCL Workers of Pittsburgh offer our full support to the employees at the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh as they seek union representation with the United Steelworkers. Workers in every sector deserve the right to organize and bargain collectively for fair working conditions.

We appeal to the Carnegie Museums to accept these employees' demands without contest. Accepting and supporting this organization effort is an opportunity to set a standard of legal fairness for educational and cultural nonprofits across the country. We urge leadership at the Carnegie Museums to align the organization's values not with Carnegie Steel's legacy of anti-union activity, but with the museums' status as beloved, community-centered cultural institutions.

The United HCL Workers of Pittsburgh was one of the first groups of contract workers at a major tech corporation in the country to win a union election. As such, we intimately understand the unique obstacles that nontraditional union campaigns face, especially in their early stages. We are confident that the Carnegie Museum workers will overcome these obstacles with the same unity and resolve that they've demonstrated by seeking representation with USW. Our workplace issues may be different, but our motives for organizing are the same: demanding better for ourselves, our coworkers, and our communities.

The United HCL Workers of Pittsburgh stand with you in your organization campaign and wish you all the best in your coming election.

In solidarity,
The United HCL Workers of Pittsburgh Bargaining Committee & Communications Action Team
