Our company is currently in the process of evaluating switching. We watched the webinar as well and they are doing a demo for us this week with one of our specs. We have probably around 100 specs to convert and this has been one of our major hurdles as to not to switch in the past. We buy the AEC collection so plant is basically free.

One of my favorite programs for piping design has been always Cadworx. I used it some years ago, before the Intergraph acquisition, and I was impressed by the easy-to-use interface and fairly straightforward implementation, that it was like love at first sight.

Ive used Autodesk products forever, and I was waiting for a piping design software like this one from Autodesk, because at that time they had the tools and the market to do it, but surprisingly it was not an original Autodesk product; I thought then soon or later Autodesk had to buy this company.

Coade continued improving Cadworx, and while they were still struggling to integrate it with their applications like Caesar II and others, finally Intergraph saw the huge potential and bought the company first. For Caesar or Cadworx?, for both?

Autodesk shipped AutoCad Plant 3D those years, and my impression was that this new application was a remake of Building System, and not a very focused piping design software as Cadworx was at the moment.

Then, because of the projects, I used PDS and PDMS a lot, and I havent had too much time to practice other applications, until these free days that you may have now too. So I downloaded the Oracle VirtualBox to install (the horrible) Windows 8 and AutoCAD Plant 3D trial, in the MacBook Pro running OS X Yosemite.

I was able to create a small piping arrangement and generate isometrics in less than 1 hour. It took me more time because I delved into details with different options and several ways to do the same thing, just to compare it to the Cadworx I know. I was impressed with the new AutoCAD Plant 3D. Extremely easy and focused on what the designer wants. I believe Autodesk has to improve the data reference part, but this is not a big deal anyway.

I believe Autodesk is on track now for small to medium-plant design projects, and they have the power (not the ownership to be clear) on the .dwg format. This is more important than you can imagine.

They have the proper strategies for market niches too. You just have to see how many applications they have that, you can say, are oriented to the same user or customer, but what they have in reality, are distinct suits to different markets niches, to attack from several positions to the same customer. They are very aggressive in small to medium size projects and in other very complex fields. In the big leagues, we have players like Intergraph and Aveva, but you know this is another thing.

Oil prices are pushing to different approaches, and cost cuts are first on the list, but the type of projects that are coming now are different too: more solar and wind projects, and small gas installations. This momentum fits tremendously with the use of software like AutoCAD Plant 3D or Intergraph Cadworx, not to mention the Bentley solution and others. So be prepared, because paradigms can change suddenly.

I invite you to know this AutoCAD Plant 3D software and comment on it down here. What is your impression?, if you have used Cadworx or another piping design application on top of AutoCAD, much better.

  • 3D Modeling: GANs (generative adversarial networks) can generate 3D models from numerous views or X-rays. DeepConvNet generates 3D shapes from a single image. Check a comprehensive list of AI image generators.
  • Character Generation: StyleGAN creates realistic computer-generated 3D characters by training on thousands of 3D scans. GANs also generate characters from text descriptions.
  • Product Design: AI assistants help designers explore the design space, create prototypes, get real-time feedback, and automate repetitive tasks like CAD modeling.
  • Architectural Design: GANs generate floor plans from textual descriptions and real maps. They create 3D building designs conditional on parameters like style and budget.
  • Customized Products: AI-customized 3D anatomical models from medical scans for prosthetics, and implants. It generates custom 3D printed objects from parameterized descriptions.
  • Natural Structures: GANs trained on microscopy images create bio-inspired 3D materials like biological tissues. They generate protein/molecular structures.
  • Concept Art: Generative models render fantastical concept art for films, games from text prompts, expanding human creativity.
  • 3D Printing: AI optimizes 3D model structure/infill for strength, and material use. It designs printable assembly structures conditional on tools/materials.

The need for innovative tools and solutions in the fast-paced industrial design and engineering world is growing. CADWorx Plant Professional is emerging as the leader, enabling engineers to tackle the complexity of plant design with surprising efficiency and precision. This comprehensive software suite smoothly accommodates new and old projects, offering various capabilities that enhance the design workflow and increase project success.

CADWorx Plant Professional is a smart software package from Hexagon. It is designed specifically for plant design and automation with packages that include various tools for creating complex 3D plant models. It is compatible with the AutoCAD and BricsCAD systems and encourages adaptation and collaboration. Its primary features include DWG file-centric functionality, smooth project continuity, automated routing capabilities, user-friendly P&ID and industrial layout possibilities, and streamlined design deliverable automation.

Objective: Utilizing Intergraph CADWorx Plant and CADWorx P&ID, Rishabh Engineering meticulously surveyed a power plant to gather data for piping routing and 3D modeling, encompassing equipment like diesel engines, generators, and thermal boilers. Structural modeling included engines, radiators, and pipe racks. Rishabh team delivered modern power to the Afghanistan power plant using CADWorx to overcome inefficiencies, slashing modeling hours by 30%, boosting productivity by 20%, and achieving over 95% accuracy, ultimately meeting project deadlines and satisfying client requirements.

CAD vendors Bricsys and Intergraph Process, Power & Marine today announced that the new release of Intergraph CADWorx Plant 2017 is compatible with both AutoCAD and BricsCAD. For Bricsys, a small software company based in Ghent, Belgium, this is a big step in their battle to be recognized as a legitimate alternative to Autodesk AutoCAD.

It is not uncommon for plant design users to acquire new seats of software when there are new projects. Until 2016, a new seat of AutoCAD was $4,100; now it is only available on subscription for an annual fee of $1,470. (All prices quotes here are retail as stated by the vendors; discounts are common.) By comparison, Bricsys sells a perpetual license of BricsCAD at three levels: Classic is $750; Pro is $880; Platinum is $1,200. It also offers annual licensing and support plans. CADWorx Plant requires either BricsCAD Pro or Platinum. With the announcement of compatibility between CADWorx and BricsCAD, Intergraph PP&M becomes a Bricsys reseller.
