GMAT is a registered trademark of the Graduate Management Admission Council.[7] More than 7,000 programs at approximately 2,300+ graduate business schools around the world accept the GMAT as part of the selection criteria for their programs.[8] Business schools use the test as a criterion for admission into a wide range of graduate management programs, including MBA, Master of Accountancy, Master of Finance programs and others. The GMAT is administered online and in standardized test centers in 114 countries around the world.[5] According to a survey conducted by Kaplan Test Prep, the GMAT is still the number one choice for MBA aspirants.[9] According to GMAC, it has continually performed validity studies to statistically verify that the exam predicts success in business school programs.[10] The number of test-takers of GMAT plummeted from 2012 to 2021 as more students opted for an MBA program that didn't require the GMAT.[11][12]

In 1953, the organization now called the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) began as an association of nine business schools, whose goal was to develop a standardized test to help business schools select qualified applicants. In the first year it was offered, the assessment (now known as the Graduate Management Admission Test), was taken just over 2,000 times; in recent years, it has been taken more than 230,000 times annually.[13] Initially used in admissions by 54 schools, the test is now used by more than 7,000 programs at approximately 2,300 graduate business schools around the world.[13] On June 5, 2012, GMAC introduced an integrated reasoning section to the exam that aims to measure a test taker's ability to evaluate information presented in multiple formats from multiple sources.[14] In April 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the closing of in-person testing centers around the world, GMAC quickly moved to launch an online format of the GMAT exam.[15]

The GMAT exam consists of four sections: an analytical writing assessment, an integrated reasoning section, a quantitative section, and a verbal section.[18] Total testing time is three hours and seven minutes. Test takers have 30 minutes for the analytical writing assessment and another 30 minutes to work through 12 questions, which often have multiple parts on the integrated reasoning section and are given 62 minutes to work through 31 questions in the quantitative section and another 65 minutes to get through 36 questions in the verbal section.

The quantitative and verbal sections of the GMAT exam are both multiple-choice and are administered in the computer-adaptive format, adjusting to a test taker's level of ability. At the start of the quantitative and verbal sections, test takers are presented with a question of average difficulty. As questions are answered correctly, the computer presents the test taker with increasingly difficult questions and as questions are answered incorrectly the computer presents the test taker with questions of decreasing difficulty. This process continues until test takers complete each section, at which point the computer will have an accurate assessment of their ability level in that subject area and come up with a raw score for each section.

The integrated reasoning section includes four question types: table analysis, graphics interpretation, multi-source reasoning, and two-part analysis.[21] In the table analysis section, test takers are presented with a sortable table of information, similar to a spreadsheet, which has to be analyzed. Each question will have several statements with opposite-answer options (e.g., true/false, yes/no), and test takers click on the correct option. Graphics interpretation questions ask test takers to interpret a graph or graphical image. Each question has fill-in-the-blank statements with pull-down menus; test takers must choose the options that make the statements accurate. Multi-source reasoning questions are accompanied by two to three sources of information presented on tabbed pages. Test takers click on the tabs and examine all the relevant information, which may be a combination of text, charts, and tables to answer either traditional multiple-choice or opposite-answer (e.g., yes/no, true/false) questions. Two-part analysis questions involve two components for a solution. Possible answers are given in a table format with a column for each component and rows with possible options. Test takers have to choose one response per column.

The verbal section of the GMAT exam includes the following question types: reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction. Each question type gives five answer options from which to select. Verbal scores range from 0 to 60; however, scores below 9 or above 44 are rare.[23]

The final score is not based solely on the last question the examinee answers (i.e. the level of difficulty of questions reached through the computer adaptive presentation of questions). The algorithm used to build a score is more complicated than that. The examinee can make a mistake and answer incorrectly and the computer will recognize that item as an anomaly. If the examinee misses the first question, the final score will not necessarily fall in the bottom half of the range.[29]

At the end of the exam, an unofficial preview of the GMAT score earned is shown to the test taker, who then has two minutes to decide whether to keep or cancel the score at the test center. A test taker can also cancel a score online within the 72 hours after the scheduled exam start time. A cancelled score can be reinstated for 4 years and 11 months after the date of the test for a fee of $50.[30]

The GMAT exam, used by more than 2,400 institutions and universities around the world, is backed by more than 60 years of testing expertise and decades of peer-reviewed research including hundreds of validity studies in the last 10 years alone. Because the GMAT exam was developed in intimate collaboration with the faculty of graduate management programs, you can rest assured that our experience and expertise will deliver results for you.

No matter where or when the GMAT exam is administered, it tests the same skills with the same level of accuracy. Even when candidates retake the test, their scores normally do not vary significantly. Test questions are developed by international experts and include multicultural examples to minimize English-speaking or US-centric bias. In fact, studies show that the GMAT exam predicts equally well for all nationalities.

Advanced identification procedures and standardized test administration conditions set the stage for the high level of security the GMAT exam is known for. That security continues with exam questions that cannot be easily memorized or shared, and a computer adaptive format that makes it extremely unlikely that any two candidates will see precisely the same questions.

Experts say that, in general, an MBA applicant's performance on the GMAT is correlated with the number of hours he or she spent preparing for the exam, but there is no hard-and-fast rule about how much prep time is necessary since that will vary by student.

"Some believe that the GMAT is something you are either good at or bad at," Lele says. "As they begin their GMAT prep, they will construe early difficulties as evidence they fall into the latter category. But these are difficulties that most face when prepping for an exam as arduous and wide-ranging as the GMAT. Bottom line: Anyone, especially with the right mentality, can improve at the GMAT, and shouldn't take early struggles as a sign that they are simply not good at the GMAT."

"Data from GMAC shows that repeat testing can provide an opportunity for score improvement," wrote Gregg Schoenfeld, senior director of research and data science at GMAC, in an email. Schoenfeld says three-quarters of GMAT test-takers improved their score when they repeated the test, with an average score bump of 30 to 40 points. He adds that 55% of test-takers who already had a GMAT score of 700 or higher when they retook the exam increased their score.

"Sometimes just having sat through the exam once, learned the procedure and how it feels, will be enough to help a second time," Alexander Lowry, a professor of finance at Gordon College and executive director of the school's Master of Science in Financial Analysis program, said via email.

Blackman says students should aim to achieve whatever score fully reflects their abilities. "Applicants almost always know whether a test score is an accurate reflection of their aptitude versus an over- or underperformance," she says. "Put your best foot forward, even if it means a retake to better align the score with one's potential and previous diagnostic exams."

According to GMAC, one recent revision of the GMAT involved shortening the exam so that test-takers spend less time at the test center. Another new feature is Select Section Order, which permits students to customize the order of the GMAT sections to match their preferences, GMAC states. In addition, GMAT test-takers now receive personalized recommendations on which B-schools they should consider "based on their interests, fit and score," according to GMAC.

I say this as someone who just scored a 750 on Practice Exam 5 just a few days ago and took the actual exam today where I did so bad I'm embarrassed to say my score (640). I take my practice exams under real conditions (wearing a mask) and on Practice Exam 5 did not see a single question that I might've seen earlier while studying through online material, so I think it's indicative of taking an actual exam.

GMAT Prep exams are supposed to be made up of questions from previous exams from years ago. If the GMAC wants to make the exam harder, fine, but at least release realistic up to date prep exams to practice off of and make your official guide questions more realistic as well.
