Hello everyone:

This has always been the problem:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/03/19/2850317.htm

We have become so accustomed to eating food that's not only out of
season, but not of the country in which we live that we think nothing
of going shopping for Paw Paws and mangoes and such in mid winter and
would be disappointed if we didn't find them on the shelves of our local
supermarket. The human body is suited to eating fruit in season, even
eating it in large quantities and often when the season delivers it to
us fresh as the morning dew.

The other thing that consumers should learn, if they want truly organic
produce is: that it may not be available in the same quantity or
attractive appearance each year. That the weather conditions, insect
and fungal attack and things that are not clearly understood make
regular supply of the same amount and the same visual quality almost
impossible. Obtaining the shortfall from overseas could be a even
greater downgrading of eating quality. We all know there are poorer
countries that can't afford the luxury of being particular in growing,
handling or transport of their produce and will at times use dangerous
chemicals because they are cheap and available; having been dumped in
their country by the western world companies which had a product banned
from use because of association with disease being caused by these
substances. These companies can't just destroy these chemicals and
still want to make some money from the product, so dump it into poorer
countries that don't know about its iniquities. Then produce on which
these chemicals have been used in those poorer countries is shipped
back into the wealthier countries to supply the demand of the western
world countries which demand fruit and vegetables out of season. The
dog chasing it's tail, or the pigeons coming home to roost.

But this has been going on for decades and will probably continue to do
so, and the general public will make its demands and the suppliers will
be sure they can supply, no matter about quality or other environmental
considerations. Where there is money to be made, all who want more of
it will justify this desire by saying they only supply that which is
demanded or should that be “damned”.

Be well,
Charlie
