The cherry tree flowers and the oak tree is yet to burst into leaf. In
some years the wind catches the cherry blossom and tears it from it's
moorings before it has been pollinated by the bees and there are no
cherries that year. This tree always seems to flower before the oak,
seen close by, breaks into new leaf. Both are seedling trees. The
cherry is supposed to be a mazzard cherry, but its fruit is sugar
sweet. We only ever get the fruit from the lower branches, it's always
been enough. The birds take the cherries we are unable to reach, oft
times before they are even ripe. Sometimes the Rosella's nip off all
the cherries on the tree at the stalk while the fruit is still small
and green and we get none at all. The birds have no concept of sharing
or patience it seems?
The oak has not behaved in recent years as it has in previous seasons,
usually losing only the leaves at the top of the tree in autumn and
retaining the leaves on the lower branches through the winter. Then in
spring, bursting into leaf at its tip while the leaves on the lower
branches are slowly jettisoned through late spring and summer and
replaced with new solar food manufacturing units. That doesn't seem to
be the case now, losing all its leaves in autumn, though later than
other oaks here, and growing a full contingent of new leaves though
later than the others of its species as well.
We sometimes lose sight of the individual tree as we look at the
species and the forest. It's always a pleasure to detect diversity, it
gives us hope of species survival.
Be well,
Charlie

I never look at the masses as my responsibility; I look at the
individual. I can only love one person at a time-just one, one, one. So
you begin. I began-I picked up one person. Maybe if I didn't pick up
that one person, I wouldn't have picked up forty-two thousand. . . .
The same thing goes for you, the same thing in your family, the same
thing in your church, your community. Just begin-one, one, one.
