Dear Neighbor,

At BU, classes started today, and campus is bustling once again. In that spirit, I wanted to share with you a BU Today feature highlighting this year’s Menino Scholars and Community Service Award recipients.

This fall, Boston University is proud to welcome 23 new Menino Scholars and 52 Community Service Award recipients. Together, these 75 students – all graduates of Boston Public Schools – represent a combined commitment of more than $18.4 million from the University over the next four years.

Recipients of the merit-based Menino Scholarship have their full four-year tuition covered by the award. Since its inception in 1973, the program – the oldest and largest scholarship for BPS graduates – has provided nearly $220 million to over 2,000 students. This year’s 23 Menino Scholars will receive more than $6.4 million in scholarships, along with academic orientation and ongoing support throughout their time at BU.

In 2009, BU expanded its commitment to BPS graduates with the creation of the Community Service Award, which meets each recipient’s full calculated financial need without loans. In 2017, the program was extended to include transfer students from BPS. This year, 52 recipients will receive more than $12 million in support. Each awardee is also paired with a staff or faculty mentor to help them transition to BU and will complete 25 hours of volunteer service each semester.

While Boston University attracts students from around the world, these scholarship programs reflect the University’s deep, lasting commitment to the talent and potential within Boston Public Schools. We are thrilled to see these students begin this exciting new chapter in their lives.

If you have any questions about the Menino Scholars or the Community Service Award, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Best,

Cecilia
