Intimate Partner Violence and Child Well-Being: Building Resiliency
Tuesday, June 30, 2015, 7:00pm
Lesley University Amphitheater, 1815 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge
More than 1 in 3 women experience intimate partner violence (IPV) and more than 1 in 4 children witness IPV. The consequences of trauma are far reaching and include increased incidence of physical and mental health issues. In addition to the long-term health implications, children exposed to IPV are more likely to act out aggressively and may become offenders themselves. By increasing connection and fostering resiliency among these children, we can interrupt the cycle of violence and help them live healthy, fulfilling lives. This is a FREE panel discussion followed by a reception with light refreshments

Registration is required. RSVP toljo...@center4si.com

U.S. Attorney’s Lecture Series -  Emergency Medical Services: Opportunities to Reduce the Reoccurrence of Violence and Trauma to Promote Community Healing
July 1, 2015 from 1:00pm-2:00pm.
John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse, Jury Assembly Room, One Courthouse Way, Boston

This lecture series will feature special guest speaker Dr. Thea L. James, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine and the Director of Boston Medical Center’s Violence Intervention Advocacy Program. Since the Boston Medical Center’s emergency department is the busiest in New England with about 130,000 patients per year, the hospital was the logical choice for the Violence Intervention Advocacy Program (VIAP).  VIAP takes victims of gunshot or stab wounds between the ages of 15 and 30, stabilizes them medically, then has a violence intervention advocate come to their bedside during the greatest window of opportunity to make an intervention.  VIAP provides the individuals with counseling, job training and safety education, connects them with resources and provides intensive case management by the advocates.  The program intervenes in about 500 cases each year, has been replicated in the emergency departments of Massachusetts General Hospital and Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, and has become a blueprint for similar programs nationwide.

MAYOR WALSH DEPLOYS CREWS TO CLEAR BOSTON’S PUBLIC SPACES OF HAZARDOUS, DISCARDED NEEDLES
Residents Can Now Report Sightings of Needles through Citizens Connect and the Mayor’s 24-Hour Hotline
Mayor Martin J. Walsh today joined Health and Human Services and the Boston Public Health Commission in announcing the Mobile Sharps Collection Team (MSCT), a new program, dispatching a crew to properly handle loose, sharp needles. In addition, Citizens Connect now has this new feature, which allows citizens to file reports through their mobile app.
When reporting a needle in a public area it is important to note specific details, pertaining to landmarks and other markers to best facilitate the fastest possible response. During slow reporting times, MSCT will travel consistently throughout Boston’s neighborhoods, collecting any needles they can find.
For information on how to safely dispose of needles and/or syringes, visit: http://www.bphc.org/whatwedo/Addiction-Services/services-for-active-users/Pages/Safe-Needle-and-Syringe-Disposal.aspx.

For more information on how to download Citizens Connect, visit: http://www.cityofboston.gov/doit/apps/citizensconnect.asp. To contact Mayor Walsh's 24-Hour Hotline, call: 617-635-4500.

An Act to protect access to confidential healthcare
Currently, any time someone enrolled through a spouse or family member's health plan accesses health services, insurers send a form detailing the type and cost of services received to the primary policyholder. Disclosing confidential health information negatively affects everyone, but this is especially dangerous for young adults and teens enrolled on their parents' plans and adult spouses covered as dependent's on a partner's plan, especially when the partner is abusive or coercive.
Massachusetts legislature Bill S. 557 / H.871, titled An Act to protect access to confidential healthcare, solves this issue by allowing patients to choose how and where they receive their explanations of benefits form. It's a common sense solution to a simple, but critical problem.
The bill is supported by over 40 providers, advocacy, and community-based organizations. You can read why they support this bill on our web site, here.
The next step in the process is for the Financial Services Committee to approve the bill. The co-chairs of the Committee, Senator Jamie Eldridge and Representative Aaron Michlewitz, will be making their decision on the bill in the next few weeks. Mayor Walsh Signs Ordinance Banning Synthetic Cannabinoid Products
Mayor Walsh signed an ordinance banning the possession, sale, manufacture and distribution of synthetic cannabinoids, also known as "K2" or "Spice," in Boston.  The new ordinance will be enforced by the Boston Police Department, which also has authority to promulgate rules and regulations. Fines for violating the ordinance are $300 per incident. Each incident of a violation will constitute a separate offense. The ordinance is effective immediately. Synthetic cannabinoids are extremely dangerous and are often sold as household products, such as herbal incense. The use of synthetic drugs can have serious side effects that can endanger the health and safety of individuals, such as severe agitation, anxiety, racing heartbeat, higher blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, muscle spasms, seizures, tremors, hallucinations, psychotic episodes, and suicidal thoughts and actions.

September 26: National Take Back Day - Clean Out Medicine Cabinets
The Allston-Brighton Substance Abuse Task Force (ABSATF) has launched another billboard campaign, funded by the Boston Public Health Commission, in three prominent locations to remind the community about the disposal of unwanted or expired medication. The campaign coincides with the National Take Back Day on September, 26, in which the public is encouraged to safely dispose of medication. Proper disposal of medication helps keep it out of the hands of our youth and reduces harm to the environment.

To assist the public with disposal, there are several permanent medication collection kiosks throughout the City of Boston, including one in the lobby of the Boston Police Department, D-14, at 301 Washington Street in Brighton. Residents may safely dispose of expired or unwanted medication in the kiosk year-round. Disposal is free, anonymous and available 24/7. You may not dispose of needles in the kiosk.

You may dispose of the following in the kiosk:

    • Prescription medications
    • Over-the-counter medications
    • Pet medications
    • Samples of medications
    • Pills, capsules, inhalers, ointment and patches
    • Vitamins
    • Liquids in glass or leak-proof containers

The permanent disposal system is a collaboration between the Boston Public Health Commission, Boston Police Department, and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. The MedReturn Drug Collection Kiosks were purchased by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Bureau of Substance Abuse Services. For a list of kiosks in Boston, please go here.

In addition to properly disposing of medication, the ABSATF urges the community to secure any medications that are kept in the home, to ensure that only the intended user has access to the medication. Purchasing and using a medication lockbox is one way to control access to medication at home. For more information visit abdrugfree.org or follow us on Twitter @abdrugfree.

Allston Brighton Health Collaborative - Fall Meeting
Thursday, October 1, 12-1:30pm (Please RSVP at abhealt...@gmail.com for location)
    Open to residents, lunch provided!

October's meeting will provide an extended presentation and discussion on the status of the hotel and motel residents that live in Allston/Brighton, how the community currently engages with the residents, who are the current stakeholders, and ways that the ABHC community can better support the needs of these residents.
We will also cover key updates on ABHC projects, including our new neighborhood resource guide, produced in partnership with Allston Brighton Substance Abuse Task Force; Food Access Committee survey results; and changes to ABHC governance and membership definitions.
There are many existing community opportunities, meetings, and resources that share community and organization updates and events. As these opportunities already exist, ABHC meetings will spend less time on member organization updates. Meetings will still provide an opportunity to network one-on-one. Meetings will focus more on public health issues and interests affecting Allston/Brighton, and, as a gathered group of representatives and stakeholders, ways that we can address and impact these issues.

We also make up some baskets ahead of time. The Septem- ber dates are the 11th and the 25th. The October dates are the 9th and the 23rd . The time frame is from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. The Saturday food basket distribution dates for September are the 12th and the 26th. The October dates are the 10th and the 24th. We ask that you arrive by 9:30am and plan to stay until 1:30pm.

    Age-Friendly Boston's Survey
    https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AgeFriendlyBoston

What factors make a city better than another to live in?
What contributes to an environment in which older adults can continue to lead healthy, productive and happy lives? The Age-Friendly Boston project challenges the city’s public agencies, businesses, cultural, educational and religious institutions and community groups to tackle these questions and consider how changes to policy and practice can enhance the quality of life for our residents. You are essential partners in creating this city wide change. With your help, we will look closely at outdoor spaces, buildings, housing, and transportation. We will assess the quality and availability of health services and community support and the effectiveness of our communication and information sharing. We want to know how to include you more fully in the civic, social and cultural life of the city and create more opportunities for volunteering and employment.
With information we learn from you, we will identify key priorities and draft an action plan. We will develop partnerships and work together to make sure our older residents can continue to enjoy their lives in their communities and contribute to a vibrant, dynamic city. Learn more at

Call to Action: Every Body Walk! Collaborative Micro Grants
    October 15, 2015
Due to the decades of engineering dominated by the needs of the automobile, most communities do not lend themselves to safe, convenient, accessible and routine walking.  Reversing past designs and creating the conditions for safe, inclusive and routine walking is complex, requires collaboration across a variety of disciplines and city departments and takes time.   To make and keep walking and walkability a priority in neighborhoods and communities, we need a strong, connected group of local activist and dedicated organizations.  America Walks and the Every Body! Walk Collaborative is working to support and grow these advocates.

Eligible micro grant activities fall into two broad categories:
    1. Focus on strengthening or elevating community-walking programs, and
    2. Fortifying the policies, systems and environments that create walkable places.

The RRT (Road to the Right Track) is a track program for Allston Brighton Youth. Every Saturday youth between the ages of 10-18 meet to work out on some of the college and university tracks in the Allston/Brighton Area. The practices consist of proper stretching along with dynamic warm-ups as well as distance work-outs and sprint work-outs. The Saturday work- outs are year round and are only one hour per week. The whole purpose of these work-outs is to encourage proper work-outs. Along with the weekly work-outs, the group meets on the 3rd Wednesday of every month for a team meeting. The Team Meetings have a different speaker with a different topic each month. Each topic is picked to assist members of the team in making good life choices. The RRT Program is part of the Allston Brighton Substance Abuse Task Force.

JOSEPH M. SMITH COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER CELEBRATES OPENING OF NEW CLINICAL FACILITY IN ALLSTON-BRIGHTON: New building inaugurates new era for renamed Charles River Community Health
A new, two-story state-of-the-art health care facility will enable the Joseph M. Smith Community Health Center (JMSCHC) to continue to expand service capacity and continue its mission of service to the Allston, Brighton and Waltham communities. The Sept. 24 ribbon-cutting on the $26.5 million facility on the site of a former State Police Barracks on Western Avenue was enabled in part by a $1 million donation from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, which has maintained a clinical relationship with the Allston health center since it joined BIDMC’s Community Care Alliance in 1997. “Health centers are anchors of our community,” said Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. “This health center is a model of how we should deliver health care not just in Allston-Brighton but around the City of Boston.” The LEED-certified clinic at 495 Western Ave. will allow the health center to consolidate services now housed in buildings at 287 and 300 Western Ave. and roughly double the 6,000 patients seen in Allston. The community health center also maintains a clinic at 564 Main St. in Waltham. “The health center is starting a new chapter in its 41st year,” said David Norton, chairman of the board of the facility founded by Allston-Brighton civic leader Joseph M. Smith. “To honor his legacy while unifying our service area, the Joseph M. Smith Building will be the new home of Charles River Community Health,” which stretches along the river from Boston to Waltham. “This new name is professional, forward-thinking, will strengthen our messaging, and connect with our patients and our community,” said Elizabeth Browne, JMSCHC’s Executive Director. “Despite the name change, we remain firmly committed to the concept of service to the Allston-Brighton community personified by Joseph M. Smith."

Legislative Update: Public Health Related Ballot Initiatives
“The Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act” and “Law Ending Marijuana Prohibition for Persons 21 Years of Age or Older” have been certified by the Attorney General and have the potential of ending up on the November 2016 ballot. Both of these bills work toward legalizing marijuana in the Commonwealth through two different strategies. The first ballot initiative, put forth by the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol and calls for allowing adults 21 and older to possess up to 1 oz. of marijuana and grow a limited number of marijuana plants in their home, the creation of a Cannabis Control Commission, and a 3.75% excise tax in addition to the 6.25% state sales tax, as well as a local option tax of up to 2%. The second ballot initiative was proposed by Bay State Repeal and would not require a new commission, would not require any taxes beyond state sales tax, and would not place limits on how much marijuana a person 21 or older could possess or grow.

Volunteer at BACC Wednesday’s Community Supper

Brighton Allston Congregational Church Wednesday Community Supper dates for September are 30th. The dates for October are the 7th, 14th, 21st, and the 28th.
The BACC does a food run to The Greater Boston Food Bank on the Wednesdays before a food basket distribution. This involves driving or riding in a U-Haul van from the church to the Food Bank, loading the van, driving back and unloading it. Boston YOU teens often help with the loading and unloading, but strong backs and arms are helpful! In September the dates are the 9th and the 23rd. In October, the Wednesday food run dates are the 7th and the 21st. Our appointment at the Food Bank is at 3:20; we usually leave the church around 2:30.
The Friday prior to the food basket distributions, we receive donations from Lovin’ Spoonfuls. Volunteers are needed to sort through and bag these items.
