When are the people of Allston/Brighton going to realized that the colleges here do not give a dam about us.  They tolerate us because we live here and it looks good in the press. They do what they want with the help of City Officials. The talk at most meetings is, the colleges are going to do a project so what can we Allston/Brighton get out of this. Instead of this mentally lets ban together and fight everyone of these projects with the help of city officials we elect and if that doesn't  work vote them out of office. How come Newton doesn't have these problems? This is our town not the colleges.

I am not sure what you mean by this:

My suggestion was that Harvard could have at least invited its Allston
neighbors to the event when the projects were being announced. The
Harvard spokesperson quoted in the Herald article is wrong. The Task
Force was not notified about the press conference.

So on one hand we have Harvard telling everyone about their wonderful
Allston partnership, but on the other hand they don't want anyone from
Allston at their press conference when announcing major new projects
in the neighborhood where we live.

You seem very bitter. The colleges do a lot for the neighborhood. Ask
the students who got scholarships because they live in Allston and
Brighton. How about the work BC did to keep St Cols open.
Without the colleges how many businesses would be open?
What we need is a positive attitude when negotiating.

I agree with johnath's assessment: bitterness and negativity seems to be the
hallmark of Redmon's missives: full of spleen and not much else.

Redmon,
I can understand some of the frustratation that stems from the local
institutional agendas, but many of these institutions do provide a
small service to the community. Even though a few of the local
businesses cater to the college kids and some businesses in Brighton
have accounts with the schools, there are some folks who like to paint
a picture that we would be a "ghost" town if it were not for the local
colleges. Because of the proximity of Brighton to downtown Boston, and
various leading business ventures in the state, I would like to think
that an area such as Allston/Brighton would still thrive even if the
colleges were not directly adjacent to us. I want to also mention that
giving scholarships to the local residents is also benefit that must
not be ignored, but it only benefits a very small percentage in the
community and not the overall community, and I feel that it is an
important distinction to make.

The institutions do in fact give to the community; the problem is that
a lot of their agendas also have negative affects on the community.

Do you advertise in the local college papers for their business?
