Hello All,
This Wednesday, 10/3, in front of Holyoke Center in Harvard Square,
members of the Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers and
supporters will protest the unfair termination of David Toomey. The
protest will begin at 4:45 p.m. with Harvard students, and workers will
join them starting at 5 p.m.
David has worked in the Harvard libraries for more than 20 years. He is an
excellent worker who routinely put in overtime. David also has a serious
medical disability. In the past he has asked for reasonable accommodations
to his disability, which Harvard has refused.
Recently two managers sent emails to hundreds of David's co-workers,
asking them to report "concerns" about David. Two employees went along
with management's plans and made petty complaints about David. Harvard
then terminated David, stopped his salary and cut off his health benefits.
Harvard is even fighting his claim for unemployment benefits! David is
burning through his savings as his medications and treatment cost hundreds
of dollars a month without insurance. Join us as we protest these
unacceptable attacks on a disabled worker! I urge everyone who dislikes
Harvard's high-handed treatment of ordinary people to come out and make
your voice heard. Please feel free to reply to this email with any
questions or thoughts.
In Solidarity,
Geoff Carens, Union Representative, HUCTW/AFSCME local 3650
