Hi,
A question on Facebook about who the eponymous John H Coyle of John H Coyle Square (corner of Washington/Market/Chestnut Hill Ave) is led to some digging and the group uncovered a relative, pictures, obituary, and a trove of information about Brighton resident Private Coyle who died at age 18 during World War I.

To this end, I'm trying to map all of the Hero Squares in Allston Brighton and get some basic information about for whom they're named. The map is stored at: https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?hl=en&authuser=0&mid=zYWjMTHIbRc8.kWPUGA-0-iQ4

www.Boston.gov/veterans/herosquares has a list of the Hero Squares, but it's not searchable by neighborhood and not overlaid onto a single map. If you're interested in doing some research on a Hero Square near your house or business? Feel free. Just send me an email with your findings and I'll update the Google Map. We're tagging it on social media with #BostonHeroSquares and #HistoryOfHeroes

Best,

Hi Rick,

The Brighton and Allston Historical Society may be a useful resource. The Museum is located in the lover level of the Veronica Smith Senior Center.  Check out their website http://www.bahistory.org/
Good luck with the project.

Liz,
Great idea. Once I have them all mapped in Google, it'll be nice to go square by square and see what we can find.

The BAHS is a great start.

Best,
Rick

At the intersection of North Harvard Street and Western Avenue, there are two Hero Square signs.  On is for Anthony J. Vacarro and the other one is for William F. Smith.  What gives in this situation?  Can an intersection be named a Hero Square for two heros?  Does anyone know about this?  I am just curious.  Thanks

Hi,
That one makes sense - William F Smith (veteran) is whom the playground is named after. See attached picture.

I did find that Comm/Harvard has 2 Hero Squares within 50ft of each other (see pic). And a block up Harvard at the corner of Brainerd are 2 Hero Squares within 30ft. Matthew Sweeney is a playground in Southie after a deceased veteran. I could find no record (so far) of why the sign is in Allston. I'll push these inquiries up the chain to the Boston Veterans Services folks.

Best,
Rick

Hi Mr. Holahan,

What a worthy project.  I think many of us pass by the signs marking the Squares, perhaps wonder idly who the person named was and then move on.

I'm interested in Lt. Pamela D. Donovan, an Army nurse who died in 1968 in Viet Nam.  She and her family lived at 10 High Rock Way in Allston (I live at 9 High Rock Way) and she did her nursing training at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.  I have additional information about Lt. Donovan, including the controversial circumstances of her death.  (Her Square is at the intersection of Washington St. and the street the runs into the former St. Gabriel's Monastery.)

If you would like additional information, please let me know and I'll send you what I have.

All the best,

Bob Pessek

Hi Bob,
Many thanks for your information. I just updated her record in the Google Map. Please feel free to send me anything else at: AllBr...@gmail.com. She's one of only EIGHT females on the Wall in Washington, DC.

All,
Does ANYONE have any information on 1LT J Gerald McMahon (AKA 1LT James G McMahon)? I could find very little other than that he died in 1944 at Montecassino, Italy. His Hero Square is Foster/Washington, across from Bangkok Bistro in Brighton Center.

Best,
Rick
