The Wingate Nursing Home closing is very troubling.

I asked my Chief of Staff to check on the closing with the Department of Public Health as to regulatory compliance.

Below is her report to me:

I have just had a meeting with Tim Miley, Deputy Director of Governmental Affairs at the Department of Public Health  (DPH regulates nursing homes).  He reports that Wingate has complied with the present law and regulations concerning closing of nursing homes, having given notice in December, more than 90 days before the intended closing.

A new requirement in effect for nursing homes giving notice in 2016 is that there be a public hearing.  A public hearing was not required for nursing homes which gave notice in 2015, as Wingate did.

Hello Everyone,

What is troubling is if you believe that the American people have a right to affordable and quality health care, which I do, is the alarming rate of nursing home closures in the United States.

Health care costs are rising again.  Massachusetts probably spends more on health care than any other state in the nation.  The real incomes of people have been declining over the last decade as non-discretionary expenses like housing, transportation, medical care, & utilities continue to go up.  Think of this, by 2030, when all the baby boomers have passed age 65, the over-65 crowd will reach 20 percent of the population and many of them will require long term care.  The average life expectancy for a 65-year-old American is 17.7 years for a male and 20.3 years for a female.

In recent years, there has been growth in alternative sources of long-term care, such as assisted living and home care services and that coverage for these services have expanded.  That's a good thing.   However, I understand this trend has hurt nursing homes in terms of occupancy.

The concern going forward is how do we help those who can't afford to stay at home, either financially and/or health wise get the quality care they deserve in local community based facilities when those facilities are closing at a rapid pace?

Hello to all,

Thanks to Senator Brownsberger and his chief of staff for clarifying this for the community.  Unfortunately for the patients and families who need to make the change from the Brighton facility, the offered options are geographically difficult for continuity of care.  I am aware of a Wingate Residence in Needham but could not find one in Dedham.  I wonder if there was any possibility that Brighton patients could be transitioned to residences closer to home, e.g. Newton, Brookline or Watertown.  This would not have been a responsibility of Wingate most likely but would have been the right thing to do. I assume that any patient who is a long term resident of Wingate of Brighton would be on the Mass Health program and other facilities may have available beds for such patients or they could be on a waiting list.  Just some thoughts from a "seasoned' community health and home care and hospice nurse.  I would be happy to help if there is a plan to intercede for the patients.

US Attorney's office just settled with a number of nursing home operators for fraudulent claims.

It has been only a matter of time for the Sisters of St.Joseph property to be developed  for its real estate potential.

Hello Everyone,

Despite the euphoria over the GE move to Boston, I want to congratulate CommonWealth Magazine for providing a balanced prospective and reminding everyone how expensive the incentive package was that the Governor and Mayor offered up to get them to come here.  Let's hope the investment is worth it.
