Join us at the Edinburgh Food Festival next week
Four free talks with Common Good Food from Wed 29th to Sat 1st August
We're very excited to be taking part in the first ever Edinburgh Food Festival next week, five days of street food, debates, demonstrations and celebrations in George Square in the run up to the main Edinburgh festival. We'll be bringing a campaigning edge to the proceedings, and are co-ordinating four discussions around food sovereignty and the current food climate in Scotland.
All four talks are free but ticketed - click on the links below to book a seat in the speigeltent and join in the discussions!

Join Fergus, Mags and Eva, the three founding members of Common Good Food, on Friday evening for a discussion about Food Sovereignty - what is it, how does it apply in Scotland, and what can we all do to help grow a better food culture in our country? We'll also be sharing our exciting plans for the Community Croft, a model of people-led small scale agriculture that we believe could revolutionise the food system in Scotland.

As the UK Government seeks to rewrite our laws on Human Rights, and our food system becomes increasingly polarised between Michelin stars and food banks, can we speak of a Right to Food? Mags from Common Good Food will lead the discussion on a human rights based approach to food, and why it plays a central role in the fight for Food Sovereignty. She'll be joined by Pete Ritchie, organic farmer and director of Nourish Scotland, who are leading a campaign to enshire the right to food in Scots law; and Kait Lauchlin, lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland, campaigner, and member of Holyrood's cross party group on Human Rights.

As traditional food culture is increasingly undermined by an urbanising population and the domination of the supermarkets, could a new food culture help cohere our families and communities, and rebuild our connection to the land? Can the arts help reimagine a Scottish food culture that is accessible, nourishing and sustainable? Led by Eva Schonveld of Common Good Food, with guest Katrin Evans, artistic director at the Glasgow based pioneering theater company A Moment's Peace.

Despite Scotland having one of the least egalitarian patterns of land ownership in the world, we also have surprisingly tenacious examples of a deep connection with the land, especially in Crofting areas. Join Fergus from Common Good Food to look at how food and land are managed under crofting, and the essential relationships between people, land, animals and plants. Joining the discussion will be Evie Murray of Leith Community Crops in Pots; Iain Mackinnon, post doctoral researcher at the University of Coventry's Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resillience; and Cheryl Macintyre, aspirant crofter from Skye who helped set up the Young Crofters movement.
