Aspart of my 2011 goal to read more books, I'd also like to introduce occasional book reviews to Tiger Print. Since my goal is to read more current books, and not necessarily the classics, these reviews will hopefully come in handy to some blog readers looking for a new book to read or to recommend. If you have a must-read for me, feel free to email me or leave a comment suggesting a new title.

About a year ago I read the book Life As We Knew It and was enraptured. The book, written by Susan Beth Pfeffer, chronicles the life of Miranda, a typical high school student whose life is turned upside down after a meteor hits the moon knocking it off its normal axis and causing all sorts of weather-related trauma.

The book is intense, in that life is not easy for Miranda, her mother or her two brothers. They have to learn how to survive without any of the normal comforts their previous life contained. There is no running water, no grocery stores, no heat. Miranda and her family have to make difficult decisions in order to survive. But through it all Miranda is heroic and determined. She is the kind of young woman we all would want to be when faced with this situation.

Based on airborne military experience with jump boots, bought Hermans in 2006; have logged about 25 miles on 'em on concrete floors and occasionally in the woods. These "boots" are 100% pure junk. The soles disintegrated in addition to coming unglued.

The English language does not have a sufficient number of expressions of disgust with which to address this level of abysmal quality to adequately warn anyone even remotely thinking about buying Herman's. Ghastly, dreadful... Shr Leung

About 13 years ago I bought a pair of Herman Survivser (Kurt model) insulated workboots. They were on clearance at Walmart for around 25 dollars. After trying them on and walking in them for the first day, I knew that they were the best fitting boot, shoe for that matter, that I had ever worn.

So I went back to Walmart the next day and bought a backup pair. I don't wear work boots except on weekends and during the long winter and spring when I cut my firewood and at other times to do other work around home. But I do treat them with little regard while I'm working in them.

I have subjected these boots to normal wear and have been surprsed with the durability of the first pair. After about 12 years of use, one boot began to leak and after getting my foot wet on a few occasions, I decided it was time to retire them, knowing that I still had a brand new pair in the closet just for the occasion.

About a year ago, I said goodbye to my old, faithful, still as comfortable as the day I first realized they were truly one of a kind for me, boots. I opened the replacement pair and as I suspected, they were every bit as comfortable as original ones. I have worn them with equal use and expected to get an equivalent amount and quality of service as the first pair. BUT, such was not to be.

After the first year, the boots are falling apart. The sole came off one boot and I noticed that the substrate is dry and powder like. I tried gluing them but the adhesive will not adhere to the disintigrating heel pad. I looked for the same model and learned that it is no longer made. What an incredible shame!

Hi, just bought a pair of Hermans just because they were the style I always have worn but coudn't find anywhere else. They were $44, but I would have spent much more just for the style and color and craftsmanship.

What I found out is that the interiors of these boots (in my opinion) were constructed out of material (known to) make your feet sweat and smell foul! And to boot, I went back to Walmart to get some odor inserts and found out that in the other aisle were HERMAN SURVIVORS ODOR INSERTS.

LOL WHAT A F*#^KIN SCAM. Not only do they wanna sell you boots that are made of the cheapest material that make your feet stink, they want you to purchase inserts as often as you need, to be able to tolerate wearing their boots.

I have had many quality leather boots and have worn them and just them for periods of 1 year or better without any!!smell or oder whatsoever. It's just like everything else in this country, every industry is after your last buck! God bless America greed.

I bought Herman Survivor boots at Wal Mart and they are complete junk. I bought these for archery deer season. I put the boots on in my basement game room and walked to the garage to get to my truck, 30 yards. Got to the woods, got out of my truck and walked to my stand 400 yards. Sat in my stand till dusk and started out and halfway 200 yards the right boot sole in the back came loose. I kept walking and within another 50 yards it completely fell off!

I went to Wal Mart and they said since it was used as a hunting boot no warranty and they are still brand new. Don't ever buy Herman Survivors from Wal Mart!!! They couldn't even make it a damn mile, how pathetic!

HERMAN DIED. Last July I bought a pair of steel toed Survivers, before I walked out of the soles, I bought another pair from Wal- Mart in December, then in August this year I started wearing the second pair and am starting to walk out of the "plastic" soles on them. In order for Herman to survive he's going to have to make a better product.

I am in carpentry construction and would like any pair of Herman Survivors to last more than 6-9 months. I always thought the Herman Survivor "name" was a good brand to base my purchase on. THEY ARE NOT!!!!

Bought three pairs for me, son, and wife and I have to say when I was a teen you had one of the best boots around. So I buy three pairs telling my family what a great boot you have, but you make my words sh*t like I lied to them because mine lasted one day.

I was gluing them back so my son didn't see they were trash, but got caught. I guess what I am trying to say is you made me a liar to my family. So here's a big F YOU to whoever carries and makes these boots now. There are no pros now only CONS, CONS, CONS, CONS.

I left my expensive Redwing hunting boots at home on trip to hunting camp. The Herman Survivor 400g camo hunting boots held up surprisingly well. They kept my feet warm and dry over several days of hunting in PA deer season 10 to 40 degrees with snow.

The boots are four years old now and I still wear them on occasions only for hunting. Bottom line is they have held up reasonably well for $40 boots, which is pretty incredible in my book. If you are strapped for money or need a spare pair of emergency hunting boots I say thumbs up.

What a joke. I have a pair that sat in the closet in a new box and I brought them out and went out West elk hunting. I am stuck in the boondocks and the soles came off one boot. I was about 300 yards from camp, before I got back the other sole came off.

I was very skeptical purchasing this steel-toe boot. But, I conned myself into it. I liked the tough-looking thick soles, so like a sucker I bought them. However, just 115 days down the road and after working in them, I noticed the leather already appeared somewhat deteriorated.

NOPE , the store would not budge from the lousy 90 day policy, so I was stuck with inferior, 90 day warranty, dilapidated, worthless, STEEL-TOE, flimsy boots. PLEASE do yourselves a huge favor and do not con yourself into buying Herman Survivors steel-toe work boots, unless you cherish slapping down about $60 every 120 days. I do not.

I bought a pair of Big Buck Herman Survivors Camo Boots on clearance from Wal-Mart. The sole completely fell off after 3 hours, Had to walk 1/2 mile back through the woods draging the soles of my boots instead of a deer on opening morning of deer season.

I bought a pair of Herman Survivor hunting boots. Now my understanding is hunting boots are supposed to be at least somewhat durable, but these boots are just junk. There is no positive to this boot; they are junk and I cannot stress that all too well.

I own many pairs of hunting boots and aside from Rockies I had no problems. Why even waste the time making this product if you can't make it right? The positive to this is if we all quit buying this junk.

I got a pair of these Herman Survivor based on having heard really good things about them. I did some research AFTER I had problems with them. I had worn them only 2 times. However, I bought them at the end of last hunting season when they were discounted @ WalMart.

I really liked they way they looked and seemed to be made very well. I put them up for the season and got them out this year. I wore them to a soccer game in January (to keep warmer toes). They worked pretty well at that. I went to take them off and noted that the heel on both boots was held with some sort of foam type rubber that had completely separated from the sole to the leather upper of the boot.

Now, I have only worn them twice. I took them back to WalMart fully expecting them to stand behind their product and was surprised by their terse response. That was I needed to return them in unworn condition and with receipt within 90 days. I protested and spoke with a manager who also rebuffed me.
