As we reach the close of Hispanic Heritage Month, I and my campaign want to continue to celebrate the accomplishments, while also acknowledging the challenges of Latinos, both nationally and in the District of Columbia.
Originally established as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, the now month-long celebration gives us a chance to honor the contributions of Latino Americans to the fabric of our city and country. Latinos are an integral part of our politics and government, excel in literature and the arts, are business leaders and innovators, and continue to proudly serve in law enforcement and the military.
We also make up a large number of the front-line workers who have continued in their jobs in the face of possible illness and death. This year, the over 60 million Latinos in the United States have been particularly challenged by the coronavirus pandemic. Latinos working in retail, hospitality, construction, health care, and agriculture have been particularly susceptible to virus exposure, job loss, hunger and possibly homelessness.
As a Latino of Dominican descent, I stand with pride in my community’s accomplishments, and am committed to working on the critical issues that our communities are currently facing. Latinos in the District of Columbia are some of our proudest and hardest-working residents, form the backbone of many of our industries, and merit recognition, now and always, for their contributions to our city.
I will be on Facebook Live tonight at 6:30pm with Rebecca Medrano, Executive Director of GALA Theater, and Maria Cristina Caballero, President/CEO of Dialogue on Diversity. You will be able to tune into that wonderful conversation here.
Sincerely Yours,
Franklin Garcia
