hi all
i have been struggling with gspcav drivers on my fedora 9 64 bit laptop for the past 1 week to get my webcam working..the best result i could get as of now is a reddish/bluish video output on skype and ekiga..cheese is not showing any output..
i have installed gspcav1 kernel support,v4lb library, and spca5xx(which my webcam genius look 312p supports-but the problem is that i wasnt able to find spca5xx for fedora 9 on the rpm repositories..so had to install that for fedora 10)..after installing this video grabber skype did show output(before it used to crash) but with reddish video..
can anyone help ?

Do you have the option of trying F11 on that laptop?  (People around here won't help you if it's F9, since it's past end-of-life). The purpose of latest distro is mainly for adding features and hardware support. Fedora 9 is dead. I don't understand the purpose of using it unless you have a hobby of collecting antiques. :P
Regarding skype
check this if it helps -- http://fedorasolved.org/Members/fenris02/installing-skype
Skype support here is limited anyway. It's a closed source and a piece of crap. AFAIK skype was compiled under fc5, and barely works in fedora now.  they've never updated it.  they renamed it once.  it's still the same fc5 cruft. Also it's really unsecure. My suggestion is to avoid it as much as possible .
However ekiga and twinkle both work nicely in fedora (F10 and 11 I'm talking about).

ya i will have access to F11 in 2 days time..but basically the problem is not with skype or ekiga..its the webcam thats giving reddish video instead of proper colors(its working absolutly fine under windows)...ok let me make my question general..how to u configure webcam on any linux env for brightness, hue, rgb control etc...
if u can tell me that it would be great...

Run cheese.
'man cheese' will enlighten you or you can just run cheese and play with it.

I guess the problem is with the unavailability of the proper webcam drivers. I have faced similar problems (no output, skype not working, purple tint to the pics) using Ubuntu.
Feisty Fawn used to detect my 10 year old Logitech webcam and I never faced any issues with it; even Skype ran pretty happily. However, both Hardy and Intrepid failed to detect the webcam of an HCL laptop I was using until recently. Upgrading to Jaunty helped, but Cheese output always had the purple tint and Skype said that I had issues with my audio!!
So I am also curious to know as to what causes the color distortion of the webcam output. As far as Richa's problem is concerned, upgrading will possibly help.

As an alternative to Skype, you can use Voice chat supported by Empathy and now Pidgin also incorporates Video+Voice chat [http://lifehacker.com/5340632/pidgin-26-adds-google-talk-video-and-voice-support] Anyone aware of any other alternative(s), feel free to share!

Hi, i think you have an in built camera, what is the output of your
lsusb, i want to know the manufacturer's name, there wasn't any
support for camera of chicony electronics try for the fedora 11. You
will have to upgrade your kernel. And then view the cam's output in
vlc. Try for v4l1 and then 2 in the similar fashion.

@saurabh i am not at my system at present...vl send u the output of lsusb shortly...vl configuring the spca5xx drivers with color parameters work?has it worked for anybody..?
@kalpana..ya thanx for the suggesstuion..i had a zen master webcam(cheaper than this genious onc) and it is working fine with ekiga with no tints whatever..however it shows no output on skype..
while this genius webcam is showing output both on ekiga and skype with a reddish tint..which indicates a problem with the compatibility of the webcam with the existing drivers...
and i looked it up..i dont think they have pidgin 2.6 for fedora 8 and up..

Get the Pidgin 2.6.1 source [http://pidgin.im/download/source/] and compile it in your system.
