Heya!
Few words have been subjected to as varied an interpretations as the word Freedom. All of us have an idea of what it means. It is, however, dangerous to presume that scripture agrees with our definition. Worse still, the ideas that flow from such foolishness are often the genesis of FALSE GOSPELS.
Galatians 5:1 has been used to declare God's purpose to free us from [insert pet evil]. Notwithstanding the moral immensity of the 'evil', be it poverty, sickness or bad relationships, we misread/abuse scripture at our peril and at the peril of those who listen to us. Because false teachers shall not inherit God's kingdom and a false gospel has no power to save its hearers.
Rather, we submit ourselves to the authority of scripture by accepting what scripture is clear about. In the case of Galatians 5:1 it was not a social agenda that Paul was championing, but a spiritual one, albeit one with deep social ramifications.
But we need to ask ourselves when we read Galatians 5: What's the big deal about Paul's freedom? Especially since it appears rather limited in scope and exercise. And what does it have anything to do with the Holy Spirit?
Please let us know if you will be joining us for dinner fellowship!
