Hi, everyone
Just wanted to share a little story to encourage everyone. Most importantly, I thank God for saving grandma.
looking back, God used me to tell grandma bible stories. I will tell her easy stories from the bible - stories which I can easily translate into teochew. eg: Raise Lazarus from the dead, paralytic, wine to water.
In the beginning, I first brought Pastor Jeff and a teochew church lady to see grandma to tell her about the Good News. She told them to drink tea.
One day, I decided to tell her bible stories. I dont know whereabouts I heard that old folks like stories. Grandma said "your stories are very nice". I cant really recall but probably in the midst of my stories, I said to grandma Jesus is God.
When I told her the Lazarus story, she will end the story with "Jesus is God". I asked her why. She said she believes all I tell her. I suddenly felt a heavy burden. After a while, my non-believer uncle told me "yen, you are teaching grandma standard textbook answer".
I tried to tell grandma about sin. She replied she thinks she doesnt have sin because she only eats and sleeps. I asked her if she gossiped before, or got angry, etc (to make it simple for her). She said yes when she was younger.
One day, I asked her the same question - if she has sin. Her reply in Teochew was " Flowers are not red every day in 100 days. Likewise, no one is good everyday in 100 days. "
Grandma has short attention span and feels sleepy very often. Once every fortnight, she will hallunicate because of insufficient sleep at night. So I try to make use of her alertness to tell her stories as and when I can.
Some days, she will say 'let us make an excursion to church - treat it as an outing". On some days, she says it is the 15th and she will tell the helper to buy chicken and duck for ancestor worship (which she doesnt do it now because of her age). But the thought of chicken and duck will be in her mind occasionally.
I prayed for clarity and in particular, for grandma to tell someone apart from my dad and I that she follows Jesus.
She was admitted into the hospital end April 2012 for breathlessness. Amazingly, she was alert and able to tell us many stories. I asked grandma " will I see you in 100 years time" (i ask her this question often at home).. She said yes. I asked why. She said "because I am a Christian". This is the first time she used the word "I am". Usually she will say because of "Jesus", or because of "Christianity".
A few minutes later, the nurse came into the room to ask grandma to fill in an admission form. I translated the nurse's question to grandma - as to what religion she is. Grandma replied promptly "follow Jesus lah". I thought that was so sweet.
Grandma was discharged from hospital after 2 weeks. However, she became restless at home and then semiconscious and later admitted again. Doctors discovered stroke. Grandma was then unconscious and we prayed for the best for her. Afterall, Jesus knows the best for her. The uncles were deciding whether to continue the oxygen mask for her, or to let her go. They just stepped away from the bedside for a few minutes when the heart beat machine went flat. One uncle even thought the machine was spoilt and went to press it on. Thank God for bringing grandma home peacefully.
I thank God that grandma was able to articulate clearly to a non-family member that she follows Jesus.
So for the first time in my family, we had a Christian send=off for Grandma. Most of my uncles are non-believers. They were agreeable to a Christian wake.
I requested for a banner with a phrase in John (I am the life and resurrection. Whoever believes in me.....) taken from the story of Lazarus which I often told grandma. The undertaker didnt have this phrase, but they said they will check their store. Thank God they discovered they have this phrase and the banner was newly made 1 month ago! Praise the Lord.
I really thank God for a smooth send-off, and for the opportunity to use the event to reach out to my entire family (all the uncles sang hymns) and for the chance to share. 2 groups of my uncle's office colleagues were happy to know grandma knows Jesus and even asked how she became a Christian.
Just to share our family's little Godly adventure in terms of "till the end of the road".
I take comfort that I will see grandma again because Jesus holds her hand and mine. Afterall, I told grandma and made a pact with her I will see her again in 100 years. :) Honestly, I wasnt not sad at all during the wake that I felt a little guilty for not being sad. Jesus honours His word.
Hope my story is not too long-winded for reading. I just type what I think. :)
Have a blessed week everyone!
