SECCC mountain bike teams,
I have no choice but to cancel our weekend at Rock Creek. Our region here has been devastated by the hurricane. I haven’t been to the venue since the storm but our roads and infrastructure can not allow our race at this time. The route we’d normally take to get there isn’t just blocked - the road is gone. I can only imagine the other damage in the Zirconia area is equally as bad as we have surrounding our downtown area.
Our students are safe and we got lucky on campus but we have zero cell/data service and our internet is predicted to be out for 3 weeks or more. Obviously, it’d be impossible to prepare to host without internet. I traveled out of town hoping to get this message out and that any funds spent on lodging could be recouped.
With virtually no contact and news feed, we are unaware of conditions outside of our county but I am hoping our cycling families at Lees-McRae, Montreat, Warren Wilson, and any others I’m not aware of that were affected by the storm are safe.
Sorry to deliver this news. I’m asking for the help of our fellow coaches as I’m virtually unreachable for the time being. Additionally, perhaps you could find a solution to still have a conference championship weekend.
