A very interesting experiment, but there is no need to rethink ecology, as basically it is just arresting the process of succession not at its climax but a seral stage, and thus more of a management technique rather than rethinking ecology.  These were highly controlled experiments and Allan Savory only provided before and after pictures, and did not provide details what went on in between – what did large number of animals eat when kept on degraded pastures, and if the lands were highly degraded,  where did the seeds of native plants come from for recovery of native vegetation.  He has tried to mimic large herds of wild animals who have a large home range and graze lands for a sort time and then move on.  In case of livestock, you can have only ‘x’ number of animals that a given area of pasture can support, and as Allan’s method, you practice intensive grazing and keep animals overnight on the pasture.

The dilemma of arid lands is that there are more animals than rangelands can support, vast majority of rangelands have very unclear ownership, and are more of a common property resource with no management system in place.  In many arid regions there are huge mortalities during periods of drought and grazing lands have shrunk due to expansion of agriculture.

Organic fertilization of land by confining animals to a piece of land has been practiced by our farmers for a long time. The farm animals were kept and fed on fallow fields before the advent of chemical fertilizers and use of farm machinery for ploughing.

Allan’s model is worth experimenting in Pakistan, and hope Ministry of Climate Change would establish a successful model for controlling desertification in Pakistan under its GEF Sustainable Land Management Project.
