The terms mentioned below have become common thanks to the work of sociologists and demographers. Speaking about the resettlement of people from one country to another, we often talk about:

migration - the relocation of a person to the territory of another state in general;

emigration - the departure of a citizen of a country abroad in order to change his place of residence (emigration is also spoken of if one has to leave the state, where a person had already moved some time ago, having left home);

immigration - the arrival of a "traveler" in a new territory;

re-emigration - the return of a person to his homeland after a long stay abroad.

From the foregoing, it should be clear what the difference between immigration from emigration and migration in general. You can add only one remark: migration is general, and emigration, immigration and re-emigration are private. However, this does not mean that one person can be an emigrant and at the same time not be an immigrant, because he will not be able to leave one country and never move to another. For clarity, let’s see who migrants and immigrants are, using an example.

Suppose a certain Anna Smith left the United States and received a residence permit in Russia. Firmly deciding to get comfortable in a new place, having drawn up documents and boarding a plane, the woman became a migrant - a man who left his homeland to live in another country. Anna Smith emigrated from the United States and became an immigrant to Russia. Please note that you can’t say “emigrate to the country”: emigrate from, immigrate from. If Anna decides to return to her homeland, she will re-emigrate from Russia.

Migration as a phenomenon has existed at all times. If people did not move from one territory to another in search of better conditions, mankind would hardly end up in Eurasia - we would live in Africa. However, as more and more states appeared in the world and more and more dangers for the common people (terrorism, espionage, organized crime), developed countries began to take measures to control visitors. The rules for entering the country and staying on its territory established in this way are called migration policies. At the beginning of the XXI century, migrants, in order to be able to live and work outside their homeland, must register in the new state:
