Journalists advise patience to motorists who expected to get acquainted with the serial convertible based on the GT 86 coupe in the near future.
A company representative who wished to remain anonymous told WhatCar that the project to create a rear-wheel drive model GT 86 with a retractable roof was "postponed indefinitely." According to the source, Toyota’s plans for 2014 and 2015 do not include a convertible, so the model can enter the market no earlier than 2016.
In August, Tetsu Tada, chief engineer of the Toyota GT 86 sports rear-wheel drive car, denied rumors that the work on an open modification of the car had been stopped. According to a representative of the brand, at the international motor show in Tokyo, which will be held in November, Toyota will show a new version of the concept model GT 86 Cabriolet and Spanish cars.
The first version of the show car, called the FT-86 Open, was shown to the public this spring in Geneva. The concept car with a cloth retractable roof is equipped with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine with 200 hp. and a maximum torque of 205 Nm. It is assumed that the commercial version of the convertible will receive exactly the same power plant. Potential car buyers will be able to choose between a manual gearbox or an automatic transmission.
