Hello all the community uptodown! I want to share with you a problem with wubi 9.10 Well when I tried to install it I got the following error: an error occurred: cannot download the metalink and there...

In my Windows 7 system, I want to install 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04.5 or Ubuntu-Mate 14.04 as a native windows application, but a full length dual-boot system. Earlier it was possible through Wubi Installer and I've used that with 32-bit Linux 14.04.1 LTS. But with my current installation requirement it is not available anymore.

I haven't ever used a different operating system other than windows before and I decided to give Ubuntu a try, so 'Wubi' the windows installer seemed perfect for an easy install. I created a 50gb partrition of my hard drive then ran wubi. All seemed to go well, I selected the partrition in the application and entered a username and password, then the app did its stuff and asked me to reboot. I clicked "Reboot Now".

Now this is where my problem is, when my computer loaded up I never got the screen that I was told I would get by the installation instructions which would allow me to choose which OS to boot my computer with, but instead I got an error message saying "Error: No such Device: " and then below it, "grub recover>".
I had absolutely no idea what to do at this point so I restarted my computer and attempted to boot from my windows hard disk again using the Miltiboot selection menu which appears when I press F12. I then saw exactly the same error as I had the first time.
So then I learned how to put ubuntu onto a LiveUSB and run it from there, which got to the purple screen with the loading dots and then all the graphics completely broke and the PC froze.
So I then moved onto the third method of installing Ubuntu - using a CD. This gave exactly the same results as the Live USB. Having had all this fail I used one of my other computers to create a windows recovery disk and this allowed me to perform a system restore on my near-broken computer, but when I boot it I still get the "grub rescue>" error.
So my windows distribution is Unbootable & Ubuntu appears not to run on my computer, brilliant. I tried booting a different OS (BackTrack 5) using a live USB. This runs perfectly with no errors but is not suitable to fix my problems, but prooved that it is wubi that messed everything up.

I am now completely out of ideas and to be honest, don't really care about Ubuntu after all this, I would just like to be able to boot my windows installation and carry on as notmal. I know I definitely should have backed up all the data but it is quite a lot of stuff (almost 1tb) and I'm 14 so can't afford any good external hard drives to back things up onto. Sorry for this massive wall of text but it did say "Include as much detail as possible".
Thanks in advance...

P.S The laptop spec is 8gb of Ram and a core i7 Q @ 1.6ghz. Can't get more info because I can't load an OS except Backtrack 5R2 which I have no idea how to use.

My thanks for your quick reply! Unfortunately the laptop came with windows 7 pre-installed and I got no disks or anything with it so I have no instalation media to use for that. And I have no idea how to do anything like installing to the partrition that I made without a working OS. Is there a way to do this?

I'd recommend creating a bug report. There've been a few reports that the 'one-time' boot for Wubi doesn't get reset. If this is really happening (nothing conclusively shown yet) then this is likely a Windows bug (it's the Windows boot manager) that controls this and is supposed to reset following the first Ubuntu boot.
However, this one-time boot is not necessary for Wubi, so even though it's technically a windows bug (assuming that's what happened) it would be better to stop doing this in wubi if it saves people from your misery. (And if you look on ubuntuforums.org there's a case very similar to yours =1996785 )

I'd recommend following up with the developers - and the only way to do this is to file a bug report and or contact them through the IRC in #ubuntu-installer channel. This wubi answers section is not well supported (I used to monitor it, but won't be in the future).

You can get a Win7 repair CD from a running Win7 computer (maybe a friend's or in the store) or download an ISO from the net for $10 and burn it to a CD. This should allow you to reinstall the windows bootloader from a repair prompt:
bootrec /fixmbr

As far as I remember, Wubi only supports Legacy BIOS mode, it adds an entry for booting the wubildr.mbr file from Windows Boot Manager. WubiUEFI supports UEFI mode, it adds an entry to the EFI NVRAM for booting an EFI file from the /EFI/ubuntu/wubildr directory. In this article, I will show you how to boot the root.disk file that WubiUEFI created from USB for portable use.

Is there a windows installer that will allow me to install Ubuntu Mate onto the laptop in a dual boot win 7 situation. I watched a youtube video of a Ubuntu 12 install using a windows installer. The guy began the install from the desktop on win 7, selected the 30 gig install size on the same C:\ drive with windows 7, the popup dialog box had a uname and pwd to fill in and that was it. He rebooted and Ubuntu installed then he rebooted again and there was an option post op either windows or ubuntu he then went back to windows to show it was still there.

My USB port works but the bootable usb option does not see or simply bypasses the usb boot. I cannot get to BIOS due to some odd password lockout that occurred. I have never put a password on any of my machines since the pc was invented. Somehow I am locked out of BIOS on my Sony Vaio. I did run a program called HWiNFO64 that read the settings in the BIOS and it states that DVD is boot enabled USB is not listed in the data from the program. I verified the cd/dvd option by placing a legit windows 7 install disk, rebooted and it immediately asks for the boot from cd/dvd in 5 secs or defaults to windows. I have a previously burned DVD of all win 7 versions that boots into the install so, the cd/dvd boot option is indeed enabled. I burned the iso image of Ubuntu Mate 15 onto DVD from the Sony computer and then I copied the iso image onto an HP and burned another disk. Neither disc boots on either the Sony or the HP. I actually did this with the i386 and 64 bit versions 4 discs in all.

If you want to install Ubuntu inside Windows, you can mout iso file of Ubuntu to disk by UltraISO. Then, open Command Prompt and type
E:\wubi.exe --force-wubi
with E is your disk you mout file iso of Ubuntu.

It would be possible but difficult and time consuming (requires making loopback files for / and /home, getting some magic to copy the boot files to somewhere on the windows, get grub4dos setup, and make some hooks for mkinitcpio to get the loopback files mounted)

After wubi sets up your computer you will reboot. Watch for the boot menuwhile your computer starts up. You will need to select "Kubuntu" from theboot menu using your keyboard arrows to actually get into Linux. The firstboot, Kubuntu will finish installing itself then you will need to reboot(into Kubuntu) again.

You want to make Linux easy to install for Windows users, well here it is. Q4OS Aquarius installed in W7 64bit via the wubi install, and it is installed as another program in Windows.

q4os is about the only distro I know that still offer the wubi install, it is not perfect but does away with the headache of trying to resize and make and mount Linux partitions.
The best distro for nvidia graphics I have found has been antix, it sure helped me out with my GT430 and GT620 graphics card.

used to run q4os back in my XP days but XP and Vista no longer supports wubi. q4os aquarious is built around Debian 12 bookworm with a KDE DE, as for me it runs just as well as a hard install. After the wubi install of q4os one reboots and is greeted with a boot menu option for q4os and you wil then have a program entry.

wubi is nothing new for Linux, it used to be on the install cd from Ubuntu, years ago. wubi is not perfect and is easy to break, but it is an alternative for trying Linux.
I did this install, not too promote one Linux versus the other, it is not about what Q4OS and or Solus will or will not do, I could care less and most Windows users would care less.
We are talking about an official LInux OS that can be installled without pain and any undue changes to their Windows environment. So the big ? why was not wubi more widely accepted by other Linux distros? Would it be because there are way too many Distros already, and each one stakes the claim of being the best Windows alternative.
